Dacheng Township was the wheat town before. The farmers’ grandfathers all grew wheat. Besides selling to the flour mills, they cooked wheat with rice. But wheat berry was not treated at that time, the shell was too rough to swallow, which was a terrible nightmare.
Under the promotion of Joy & Hope Wheat, the area of wheat farms in Dacheng now ranks first in Taiwan, totaling over 100 hectares. Thanks to the subsidy from the Council of Agriculture (45,000 NTD per hectare), many farmers were willing to grow wheat. Now, Joy & Hope Wheat has contracts covering 32 hectares of wheat farms, even in Erlin Township. In October, seeds will be sowed, and there are more farmers that like to join. Dacheng is expected to regain the glory of wheat town.
Refuse to petrochemical industry, Dacheng Township hopes to be a wheat town
The north wind in Dacheng Township comes earlier than from Hsichou Township and Chutang Township in the inland, so the quality of rice is poor at the second phase. The rice from Hsichou Township and Chutang Township are always milled first, and rice from Dacheng is left to be feed. If the wheat production can be stable, the farmers may not need to grow the second phase rice, so that Dacheng Township truly becomes a wheat town. It is hope that wheat can bring a bright future to Dacheng Township, and it does not have to be a petrochemical town.

New wheat town Dacheng Township promotes processed products
Dacheng Township has the largest planting area of wheat in Taiwan. By joint efforts of Dacheng Township Office, Dacheng Township Farmer’s Association, and the locals, wheat processed products are introduced to turn Dacheng into a new wheat town. Dacheng Township’s wheat production area is 180 hectares this year, and it has been recognized as the new wheat town in Taiwan. In addition, the Dacheng Township Farmer’s Association also launched various wheat processed products, of which the most popular product is Dacheng potato wheat cake. Through online promotion, orders from cities across Taiwan have flooded in. Dacheng Township Farmer’s Association mentioned that as a wheat town, they are trying to develop more new wheat processed products. Mr. Chi-sheng Liu of Dacheng Wheat’s Production and Marketing Group said they try build the brand image of wheat town, and hope more people know Dacheng Township through wheat.

In order to celebrate Dacheng wheat ranked first nationwide, the town has introduced the super-value local wheat product tasting for a limited time. For only 100 NTD, customers can enjoy a set meal of French bread, wheat grass juice and Dacheng whole-wheat black sugar steamed bun. The event aims to promote Dacheng wheat, and prepare for the “Dacheng Wheat Festival” in the future.
Mr. Chi-sheng Liu, the director of the fifth production-marketing team of Dacheng Township, said that they believe in the concept of environmentally friendly farming of wheat to improve the self-sufficiency rate, and actively promote Dacheng Township to plant wheat. Now, Dacheng Township production-marketing team has 180 hectares of wheat crops this year, become the nation’s largest wheat town.
Mr. Liu said that they expect to hold a concert in Dacheng Township wheat field in early March this year, and also hope to hold the “Dacheng Wheat Festival” in the future. Thus, they hope to gain feedback from the public from this tasting event. The event is held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., from the 14th to 16th, at Dacheng Township Farmer’s Association. Some customers have made orders through group-buy. The first step is to introduce the flavor of Dacheng wheat to the public, then by combining wheat with local characteristics, it is expected to create a bright future for Dacheng wheat.
