During the Qing Dynasty, Fujian immigrants facilitated the development of Taiwan’s tea industry.  Wenshan’s tea variety is Tiehguanyin tea. In 1895, Zhang Yumiao introduced 12 Tiehguanyin tea trees.  Later, Japanese government imported 3,000 tea trees to Muzha.  At that time, Muzha was the only Tiehguanyin tea production region.

During his Mayor’s term of office, Lee Teng-hui established Muzha tourist tea plantations.  Drinking tea became popular among local people and Muzha Tiehguanyin tea was propelled to fame.

    4.After 1980s

In its early days, Muzha’s tea farmers made a living by growing and selling tea.  However, in 1980, with the emergence of tourist tea plantations, farmers not only sold tea but ran restaurants to attract tourists to come.  In order to promote the tea of tourist tea plantations, the competition of Tiehguanyin tea was held every spring, autumn and winter. The competition rules was about tea’s aroma and taste(50%), shape(30%), and leaf color(20%).  Muzha tourist tea plantations combined the sale of tea and the life of drinking tea and it became Muzha’s distinctive features.
