1.During
the Early Period of Japanese Rule
During the Qing Dynasty, Fujian immigrants
facilitated the development of Taiwan’s tea industry. Wenshan’s tea
variety is Tiehguanyin tea. In 1895, Zhang Yumiao introduced 12
Tiehguanyin tea trees. Later, Japanese government imported 3,000
tea trees to Muzha. At that time, Muzha was the only Tiehguanyin
tea production region.
2.During the
Late Period of Japanese Rule
During the late period of Japanese rule, Muzha’s
tea industry was greatly impacted by WWⅡ.
However, after the war, the recession of the tea industry worsened.
It seemed no chance to restore.

3.Lee Teng-hui, Mayor of Taipei
During his Mayor’s term of office, Lee
Teng-hui established Muzha tourist tea plantations. Drinking
tea became popular among local people and Muzha Tiehguanyin tea
was propelled to fame.
4.After 1980s
In its early days, Muzha’s tea farmers made a
living by growing and selling tea. However, in 1980, with the
emergence of tourist tea plantations, farmers not only sold tea but
ran restaurants to attract tourists to come. In order to promote
the tea of tourist tea plantations, the competition of Tiehguanyin
tea was held every spring, autumn and winter. The competition rules
was about tea’s aroma and taste(50%), shape(30%), and leaf
color(20%). Muzha tourist tea plantations combined the sale of tea
and the life of drinking tea and it became Muzha’s distinctive
features.
