Q: How long have you been the remedial teaching teacher in Chinese phonetic
symbols? What’s your job? 3 years. I was originally a teacher in this school, and became a library volunteer after I retired. These enthusiastic volunteers invited me to join the team because they said that I could make the most use of my teaching expertise to help the children in need. Q: What kind of student do you think need to attend the remedial class? How long does the class take? The first graders learn Chinese phonetic symbols in the first ten weeks in the school. Then the grand exam of Chinese phonetic symbols is hold. After the grand exam, the home-room teachers give us the name list of the students in need of improving the ability of learning Chinese phonetic symbols. We plan to provide 10 to 15 times’ remedial teaching in the morning, twice a week. Q: We saw every volunteer in accompany prepare paper, books and glue. What is the use of the glue? There is much to learn in the class. It’s really difficult for the kids to amend all the things in such a short period of time. We attach with glue the nursery rhyme sheets on their assignment books so they can practice in writing or reading for many times. The volunteers can also have more time to help them learning. Q: During the classroom observation, we saw you ask children to the front to point at the correct phonetic symbol. What would you do if some of the kids couldn’t point out the right one? The kids attending the class usually lack of self-confidence. In case some kid couldn’t point at the correct symbol, I would ask another kid to answer first in order that this kid could get ready to answer. It’s always the first priority that we help the kids not to reject the class. Q: What would you do If you encounter some disobedient kid? What kind of help would the volunteer beside the disobedient kid give to you? There is currently no such kind of disobedient kid in the class. All the kids follow the guidance of the teacher and the volunteers. If there is such a case, I wouldn’t blame the kid publicly in front of the other kids. I would ask the volunteer beside the kid to calm down the kid’s mood, and then have a talk with the kid after class to prevent the situation from disturbing the other kids. Q: We have interviewed some other volunteers in the small-group counseling. They get together giving feedback or sharing ideas with each other after class. Do you and the volunteers get together after class? We currently don’t do it after class, but I do tell the volunteers the teaching content every time before the kids come to class. The feedback and sharing session after class you mentioned is very good. I can ask the volunteers for their thought about this idea and then make an implement. I believe it will be helpful. Q: We saw the kids attending the class very happily and with no pressure. How do you know the kids make in learning Chinese phonetic symbols? In fact, the kids come to the class to be interested in learning rather than getting scores, so I only design the phonetic alphabet game. They can learn the phonetic alphabet through games. For example, in the phonetic spelling bullfighting, two children hold phonetic symbol cards on the back. And then they need to show their holding card at the same time. The one who reads out the other’s phonetic symbol first can take the card. In the end of the game, the one who has more cards wins. Besides, we attached the lyrics sheets on the kids’ assignment books, so they can practice at home. We give the kids extra points if they can preview the lesson or practice before the class. As long as they don’t lose their confidence in learning, I believe they can make the learning accomplished. They just need a little more time. |
