Interview with the counseling teacher

Interviewee: Pae-chi Chung (professional tutor)
Experience: 4 years
Counseling experience:the small-group counseling, teacher in the growth courses
Q: Why do you want to be a counseling teacher?
I’m interested in getting to know others’ ideas, so I learned a lot related with counseling.
Q: Have you ever had the thought of giving up being a counseling teacher?
Yes, I had the idea that I’d better leave when I tried my best to help some child but there was no improvement at all in his behaviors or things even went worse. However, I wanted to see if there was some other way available to help him soon.
Q: What will you do when facing some disobedient students? Are you going to deduct "hearts" as a little punishment? Is there any other thing you will do?
Most students will do what the teacher says. Only few don’t listen to the teacher. Before deducting the hearts, I will explain the rules. I make it happen when some student doesn’t follow the rule. I even refuse him to participate in the group activities. it goes worse, I would ask the student to stand aside in order not to disturb the other students.
Q: Is there any particular meaning about the story you told to students? Can you tell us using "The Fox Hatches Eggs" as an example?
There is an idea for each story or picture book that the author wants to express. I choose stories according to the different characteristics of the children who attend the courses. The story "The Fox Hatches Eggs" you listened to is to convey a right idea.
What meaning do you think the story want to convey after listening to it?
(Our answer: We think we should trust a friend no matter what the other people say.)
The meaning of the story is we need to trust our friends. Do not tear the friendship because of what others say without checking it out. Otherwise it is easy to lose a good friend.
Q: Is there any activity other than stories in the courses you design?
The content of every courses are not the same. Sometimes it’s story and sometimes it’s a game. So the participants in the small-group counseling won’t feel pressured. They can relax and learn a lot.
Q: Do you design these courses on your own? Do you use textbooks?
There’s no such a textbook available which can meet all the different needs of each child in the class. Some stories used in the courses are adapted for from the internet or some books, while the others are from the existing materials. The material I used when you attended the 2 small-group courses last time is the books and CD from The Primary School of EQ.
Q: What is the most impressive experience you have as a counseling teacher?
Counseling teacher helps children in need. I am happy to see the change and growth of the children who came here and get approved of their identity by the parents or teachers. I remember one time when I just took the job, I talked to a nearly dropout student. After talking with him, the frequency of his attending school became much higher. His home-room teacher and I were very happy about his change.
