(picture source:provided by Chen Wen-long Architectural Firm) The restoration project of the historical ChiaYi county jail is a special case. It demonstrates a traditional construction and an artistic character of Taiwan at the time occupied by Japan, and represents a collected memory of the daily life of the residents of Chiayi area and the prisoners as well. Because of this, we have put many thoughts in constructing the atmosphere of the jail remains and in reserving local wood-carving arts.

Next, there are a lot of original design problems in this structure. The building was also seriously damaged by seeping water. Attempting to renovate the structure from the cultural and historical point of view not only makes this project more questionable but also more difficult.

One of the most unforgettable experiences of this project comes from the contribution and apprehension among local residents, historical groups, and schools. This local earnestness to restore its original historical structure, which surpasses the consideration of the central government and the property owner, motivates us to persist in the design. For us who stand at the front of the lines, it is an extraordinary affirmation and inspiration.

This renovation project only involves the external appearance of the historical site. The significance of this work depends on the future uses of the property. The social groups involved at the certain historical space and time will decide its success or failure. The historical sites are surrounded by local residents. If the residents are not interested in taking care of their own history, even though professional teams are hired, it will be still impossible for them to contribute their specialty. We wish this experience will encourage those who are inspired to pursue researches in historical and bibliographic studies.
