Meiji 28 (1895)

The Japanese government established the "Chiayi Prison Bureau."

 

Meiji 30 (1897)

"Chiayi Prison Bureau" was abolished and changed to "Tainan Prison Chiayi Branch Prison."

 

Meiji 42 (1909)

"Tainan Prison Chiayi Branch Prison" in the old city area was abolished

 

Taisho 8 (1919)

The prison structure for "Chiayi Branch Office" are was constructed at No. 209 Taidoukeng in the northeast region of Chiyi City.

 

Taisho 12 (1923)

"Chiayi Branch Office" was changed to the "Chiayi Branch Prison."

 

Taisho 13 (1924)

The name of "Chiayi Branch Prison" was changed to "Tainan Judicial Bureau Chiayi Branch Office."

 

1947

"The first branch of the third prison in Taiwan" was renamed "Taiwan Chiayi Prison."

 

1976

The "temporary methods for branch prison inmate management" was abolished, and the "prison inmate maintenance standards" were established; the Chiayi Prison was designated as a regular prison.

 

1994

To accommodate the "Project for Prison Improvement of Ministry of Justice," the Taiwan Chiayi Prison was moved to Lutsao Township in Chiayi County, the old address in Chiayi City was re-designated as "Taiwan Chiayi Prison Chiayi Branch Prison."

 

1996

Former Minister of Justice Liao Chenghao surveyed the prison and announced the plan for establishing the "prison historical museum."

 

1996

Retired personnel were visited to make records of the history, for future recollection of artifacts.

 

1996

The Department of Justice established a team for organizing the "prison historical museum."

 

1997

The Council of Cultural Affairs and the Department of the Interior were requested to form a planning team, and the team members were fixed at the end of June that year.

 

1997

The planning team established the name of the "prison historical museum," as well as the museum objectives, and points for collection of historical materials and artifacts.

 

2002

June 10, the controversy over preservation and demolishment of the Old Chiayi Prison was finally over, and the Council of Cultural Affairs designated the "Old Chiayi Prison" as the eighth city historical monument in Chiayi City.

2005

April 21, the Department of the Interior designated Old Chiayi Prison as a national historical monument.

The Prison Museum should be officially opened with the World Music Festival.
