Located in central Taiwan, Douliu is nowhere near the sea. Yet it is home to stalls selling fresh fish and sea food. One particularly successful stall has been “West Market Jiang Dong Gang Sashimi”.

In the early days, if residents of Douliu or nearby towns wanted to buy fresh fish or seafood, they depended on products brought in from fish farms or the Dongshi fish market in Chiayi. But for three generations now, Jiang Dong Gang Sashimi has been selling fish at the West market.

The third generation owner saw the big potential of selling frozen seafood, and left the western market in 1995, moving to a location that was more convenient for transportation logistics. Extending its network from Douliu to nearby places in all directions, the company has now become the largest seller of frozen sea food in Central Taiwan.

Despite the success of her son’s business, Mr. Jiang’s mother has continued to run the family’s stall on the West market and serve her regular customers. When you visit the Jiang Dong Gang stand on the West market, have a freshly cut dish of assorted sashimi and inquire about the cultural evolution of Taiwan's 'banzuo'banquets.
