Questionnaire

To further understand the views held by the school for Pingding Ancient Channel, we distributed student questionnaire to 4~6 graders and teachers with analysis and discussion.

A.Student Questionnaire Analysis

I. Basic Information:

1.Gender:□MaleFemale

The male/female ratio for 4th graders to 6th grades is about half and half.

2.Grade: □4th Grade   □5th Grade   □Sixth Grade

The majority of respondents consisted of 4th graders, followed by 6th graders and 5th graders.

3.Where do you currently live?

   □ Local (Shilin District) □ Taipei City  □ New Taipei City □ Others               

Most people live near Shilin and a small number of people live in New Taipei City and Taipei City

II. Questions:

1.Do you know what “channel” refers to?

   □ River  □Underground water  □ Gutter  □Lake  □Don’t know

Only more than 30% of students know that channel refers to gutter while more than 60% of students do not know what channel is.

2.Do you know what channel is for?

  Fish and shrimp farming   □Farmland irrigation  □Water storage  □Don’t know

Over 60% of students know that the purpose of channel is to irrigate farmland. However more than 30% of students chooses other answers.

3.Do you know about “Pingding Ancient Channel? □ Yes  □Don’t know

About 40% of students know about Pingding Ancient Channel but the other 60% of them do not know about it.

4.Have you walked on the trail of Pingding Ancient Channel? □Yes   □No

Because few people know about Pingding Ancient Channel, so only 1/4 of students have walked on the Ancient Channel.

5.Would you like to know more about Pingding Ancient Channel? □Yes   □No

Most people would like to know more about Pingding Ancient Channel and only a small number of people do not want to know about Pingding Ancient Channel.

6.Would you be interested if the teachers take you to Pingding Ancient Channel? □ Yes   □ No

Most of the students wish to visit Pingding Ancient Channel but there is a small number of students who don’t.

7.Pingding Ancient Channel is the best channel preserved by Taipei City and is located in Shilin District. Do you think the school should add “Pingding Ancient Channel” to the folklore course?

□ Yes   □ No

Most students is interested in adding Pingding Ancient Channel to the folklore course but about 20% of students refuse.

8.Would method would you like to learn courses related Pingding Ancient Channel?

□Introduction by channel related personnel on campus  □Media playing instruction  □In-field survey □ Others       

Most people expect the course to be carried out in in-fiend survey, accounting for more than 50%, followed by introduction given by channel related personnel, and finally the least number of students desires media playing. 

9.Do you wish your school to arrange Pingding Ancient Channel survey in the mountain activity?

   □ Yes   □No                   

Most people wish to arrange for visit to Pingding Ancient Channel for mountain activity with only a few refuse.

10.There is a 200-meter tunnel at the channel, would you like to have your teacher take you there and walk on the channel tunnel? □Yes □No

Most students would like to have their teachers take them to the tunnel with only a few refuse.

11. Do you think the school should list Pingding Ancient Channel Trail into mountain activity?    □Yes   □No      

About 3/4 of students believes that the school should list ancient channel trail as one of the mountain activity routes with a few refuse.

Analysis and Conclusion from Student Questionnaire:  

 

We conducted survey on 4~6 graders for the questionnaire. Channel is discussed in the 4th-grade social study course and we would like to know if the students know and understand ancient channel. The result shows that although most students live in Shilin, the interview results suggest that more than half of the student do not know Pingding Ancient Channel too well and desire to visit and acquaint with Pingding Ancient Channel. They even agree to include it to the folklore course of the school, while teachers should take students to visit Pingding Ancient Channel. For this reason after conducting group discussion, we all agree to promote the channel on campus to further introduce and promote the benefits of Pingding Ancient Channel, which could perhaps improve such situation so that we could all gain further understanding on Pingding Ancient Channel.

 

B.Teacher Questionnaire Analysis

I. Basic Information:

The male/female ratio of the school if 6:4, with female teachers accounting for the majority.

2.Position: Grade □1st & 2nd grade □ 3th & 4th grade □4th & 5th grade  □Full-Time  □Administrator

In school, full-time teachers and administrators account for 60% while homeroom teachers account for 40%.

3.Teaching seniority: □Within 5 years □6~10 years □11~15 years □16~20 years □More than 20 years

About 70% of school teachers have over 16 years of teaching seniority, suggesting the school teachers are very senior and have a lot of teaching experience.

4.Where do you currently live? □Local (Shilin District) □Taipei City  □New Taipei City □Others           

About 30% of teachers live close to the school, with half of the teachers live in Taipei City and only 20% of students live in New Taipei City or even as far as Taoyuan.

II. Questions:

1.Do you know about “Pingding Ancient Channel?” □Yes □No (Please directly skip to Question 3)

More than 60% of school teachers know about Pingding Ancient Channel but nearly 40% of teachers do not know about it.

2.How did you find out about “Pingding Ancient Channel?” □Live close by   □Informed by parents or friends  □Online information   □ TV   □Books   □Others              

Most teachers know about Pingding Ancient Channel from friends and relatives, followed by online information.

3.Have you walked on “Pingding Ancient Channel” trail? □Yes   □No

Most respondents have never walked on Pingding Ancient Channel.

4.Do you think “Pingding Ancient Channel” is well-known?  

   □ Yes (Please directly skip to Question 6)    □ Not very well     □Mediocre

Nearly 95% of teachers believe Pingding Ancient Channel is not well-known as mediocre.

5.What is the reason for unknown?

   □No publicity   □Lack of relevant supporting activities  □Inconvenient traffic  □Others        

Half of the teacher believe that Pingding Ancient Channel is unknown is because lack of publication while other respondents believe that the lack of relevant supporting measures lead to the low publicity. Few respondents believe that the traffic inconvenience is the main reason.

6.Would you like to acquaint with Pingding Ancient Channel? □ Yes   □No

Basically the teachers like to take students to survey Pingding Ancient channel so that they can approach the nature more.

7.Pingding Ancient channel with over 150 years of history is the best channel preserved in Taipei City and located in Shilin District, and do you think the school should include Pingding Ancient Channel in folklore course?     □ Yes   □No 

All teachers of our school agree that the school should include “Pingding Ancient Channel” in the folklore course offered by the school.

8. The Pingding Ancient Channel is covered by dense trees with abundant water environment that not only provide aqueduct suitable for the living of various aquatic animals, shrimps, crabs, fish, and tadpoles while the dense forests also incubate abundant ecology for a diversity of insects and reptiles. If you had the change, would you like to take the students and visit Pingding Ancient Channel trail? □Yes   □No

Nearly all teachers are willing to take students and visit Pingding Ancient Channel.

9.Which method would you like to acquaint with courses related to Pingding Ancient Channel? (Multiple choice)

Introduction by channel related personnel on campus     □Media playing instruction    □Conducting in-fiend survey     □ Others  

Nearly half of the teachers believe that in-fiend survey will lead sutdents to acquaint with Pingding Ancient Channel. However a considerable number of teachers suggest for incorporating these three methods into course teaching.

10. Pingding Ancient Channel can be arranged with many relevant supporting activities. Which supporting activities would you be like to participate? (Multiple choice)

    □Water activity □Game activity □Tourism farm vegetable harvest  □DIY hand-dye bag

About 30% of teachers are willing to participate in tourism farm vegetable harvest and water activities, followed by DIY hand-dye bag and game activity.

11. Do you think the school can list Pingding Ancient Channel Trail into mountain activity?

    □Yes   □No  

Most teachers suggest adding Pingding Ancient Channel trail to the mountain activity. However there are still a small number of teachers who disagree with this approach.

12.Chi-Sing Ecology Foundation holds Pingding Ancient Channel training course from time to time, with humanistic and history guide and biodiversity seed teacher. Would you like to participate if you had the chance? □Yes   □No

Most teachers are willing to participate in the Pingding Ancient Channel Training course held by Chi-Sing Ecology Conservation Foundation from time to time. Only a small number of teachers refuse.

13.In each July and August, Chi-Sing Ecology Conservation Foundation holds “Pingding Ancient Channel” water activity with guide explaining the animal and plant ecology of the channel. Would you like to encourage the students to participate in this activity?

All teachers are willing to encourage students to participate in this activity.

Analysis and Conclusion from Teacher Questionnaire:

 

Our questionnaire survey shows that more than 30% of teachers do not know about Pingding Ancient Channel and hence we expect to hold an activity in school for promotion, so that all teachers will acquaint with this paradise of Taipei City – Pingding Ancient Channel. Basically teachers are willing to take students to acquaint with Pingding Ancient Channel, in addition to adding Pingding Ancient Channel into the folklore activity course of the school. However a small number of teachers are unwilling to include Pingding Ancient Channel in mountain activity. We speculate that it was because the trail at Pingding Ancient Channel is not accessible and not suitable for climbing by students. This is also a manner of history manifestation, exhibiting the process of predecessors exclaiming diligently for live. We think this merits further survey by the students.
