In 1909 Chao-Xiang Wu contributed 6530 gold to
open the Channel and excavate the cave. The cave tunnel is about
400 meters and the Channel is about 7 kilometers, which is the
total length between the old and new Channels. Located on the
lowest position of the three Channels, Chao-Xiang Wu, formerly
known as Dengfong Wu and then the Channel was named Dengfong
Channel.(a)
The water reaching Dengfong Channel was scarce
after the Ancient Channel and New Channel intercepting some
water from Neishuang Creek. Hence the excavation of the Channel
required crossing Neishuang Creek and drew water from Dingshan
Creek along the high lines and the Tianweixi at the origin, in
order to stabilize the water yield of Dengfong Channel.(i)
Plus the Dengfong Creek is long enough to converge water
from narrow and small creeks in the mountains along the way, in
addition to introducing the water from “Xiangdui Mine Field”
Dengfong Channel hence became the Channel with the most
abundance of water among the three Channels.(j) |

The entrance to Dengfong Channel is located under the entrance of New
Channel, which can be sought from the mountain path cross from the water
in Pingdeng Village. Walk along the Ancient Channel connecting Channel
and Xiping, then along Dengfong Channel. Turn right to walk for some ten
minutes to reach the entrance of Dengfong Channel. The entrance of
Dengfong Channel is narrow and small plus the flexural of Channel
intersecting with Xiping Ancient Trail is 90 degrees, hence tourists
walking along Dengfong Channel are far fewer than that of the previous
two Channels. Dengfong Channel is not only installed with water intake
but also weir across the creek. Continue forward to reach the creek
value, Dingshan Creek and then the Tianweizi Creek connecting to the
Dingshan settlement. On the left is the Temple for the God of Land and
Diantougong Temple. Walk upward further to reach Dingshan Industrial
road. The entire Dengfong Channel route of 7 kilometers is then
completed. On the way take, walk downward from Dingshan settlement to
Xiping Ancient Trail, then take right to Taoxijiao Bridge, heading in
the direction of Qingfong Pavilion to Pingdeng Police Station. Finally
take the bus home and the course of walking along Dengfong Channel is
then completed.(j)
In 150 meters from the Jincheng Ranch Chicken City bus stop on Wanxi
Industrial Road of Xishan Village, Shilin District, heading to the
direction of Dingshan, will lead to the water origin of Dengfong
Channel.(a)

The process of building Dengfong
Channel involved concurrent renovation at upstream
and downstream, while the instrument at the time was
not as accurate, some regions became higher and some
lower after the entire anal was opened up. The
tunnel consists of three different sizes, including
211.5 meters (2.7 meters in height and 75cm in
width) long, 169 meter long meters (65~90cm in
height and 75cm in width), and some artificial
excavation of 8.5 meters (195cm in height and 100cm
in width), which results in great gap between both
sides inside the Dengfong tunnel.
(j)
Different from the two Channels, the
New Channel tunnel requires pre-application to visit
and walk freely. Due to the better technology of
building in 1909 plus the stable geology, long
tunnel length suitable for the habitat of bats,
there are rich and valuable bat species inside the
tunnel of Dengfong Channel (Taiwan leaf-nosed bat,
common bent-wing bat, Japanese house bat). To
preserve the habitat ecology of bats of the tunnel,
Dengfong Channel is not open to the public. In
addition, in consideration of the flying habits of
bats, Chi-Sing Irrigation Association designed the
fence of iron gate for Dengfong Channel in
“horizontal” style in order to prevent bats from
hitting the fence during flying.
