New Channel

Pingding New Channel was reclaimed in 1849, jointly reclaimed by the field owner Zhou’s Family, Nan-Zhi Zhou and others, inviting some 70 residents who raised funds of 1,000 Silver Dragon Coins. The water was diverted from the upstream of Neishu Creek. The total Channel excavated was about 4 kilometers while the tunnel penetrating the cave was about 300 meters in length, which is the one with longest tunnel length among the three Channels. Moreover, this aqueduct mainly irrigates the agricultural land in Goyinqing Area and differs from the regions irrigated by the Ancient Channel. To find the origin of this Channel, one must go to Ancient Channel Qinshan Trail from the Qinfong Pavilion in Pingdeng Village. In 120 meters after entering the entrance of Ancient Caal tunnel, arrive to the fork in the road and then turn right. Walk downward on the trail for about 150 meters and then turn left. Follow the Channel in upstream direction for about 600 meters to arrive to the site.(a) Nonetheless, same as the Pingding Ancient Channel, this Channel was signed in a reclamation contract by the land owners and Channel owner, before the reclamation. The following is the original text of the reclamation contract, with explanation on the back that describes the purpose of excavating this Channel.

New Channel Reclamation Contract, November, 1849:

The following undersigned persons, Yong-Tong Zhou, Nan-Zhi Zhou and other, in charge of Shanpu and partners, and former Yongxin Keng Wu Yuan, partnered to offer mountain land for reclamation, which penetrates through Zhilanbao Creeks, Daping and Diding, with address on Goyinqing. The contract hereby instructs the terms and conditions hereinafter that the fields can receive irrigation from the Channels excavated. The contract hereby states the plan of reclamation of land and commissions Nan-Zhi Zhou as Channel owners due to inconvenience of remote Channel origin. The Channel owner shall prepare funds to excavate the Channel and irrigate the agricultural land for supply of crops. It is hereby resolved that the Xiapu land irrigated by the Channel shall be shared by half, with the original contract signers receive half of the land and Channel owner Nan-Zhi receiving the other half, while the Channel is also divided into half for irrigation.”

The main reclamation position of the New Channel in 1849 was located on Goyinqing and this area was a hillside topography, which shaped like a dog lying down to sleep, and hence named “Sleeping Dog,” or “Goyingqing” in Taiwanese. Although the Channels were excavated in 1835, the Ancient Channel was too far from the Channel origin for water intake. Hence to boost the local land value, the local residents invited Channel owner Nan-Zhi Zhou in charge of building Pingding New Channel.(k)

The New Channel is 161 years now and the faces with serious collapse. The interior of the tunnel also frequently faces with landslide while several sections of dry stone walls at the entrance of the tunnel have fractures and compressed walls. Hence Chi-Sing Irrigation Association renovated the Channel under a project budget of approximately NTD 26 million in 1998. (a)

During the renovation process, since the construction site was inside the conservation area where the construction vehicles could not reach; and the Association could only borrow land from farmers nearby as roads and construction site. Finally the renovation was completed in April 14, 1999 and a completion passage ceremony was held on May 28.(a) Now the Channel has become a tourism Channel road.(j)

The starting point for New Channel is the water origin. To find the origin, take the trail next to the Ancient Channel fence and head to Neishuang Creek since the New Channel follows the route of Ancient Channel. Pass the creek and get to the left bank, turn right and take the trail to connect with Neishuang Creek again. There is one circle stone water inlet on the right bank and that is the origin. There is a stone trail next to the origin. Walk down from the trail and there will be a gate on the Channel. Some gates would be divided into three sections. This is used for modulating the water flow. Follow the Channel and walk for about 30 minutes to arrive to the intersection of Xiping Ancient Channel. Continue to walk for about 10 minutes to arrive to the Pingding New Channel tunnel. Currently the tunnel is closed by gate and application must be filed to the competent department, Chi-Sing Irrigation Association for access. After leaving from the tunnel exit, turn left and return to the water origin located in Land 95 of Pingjin Street. In the absence of application for walking along the New Channel tunnel, it is required to return from the tunnel gate through original route, go back to Xiping Ancient Trail and then get off the mountain, which will put an end to the journey of Pingding New Channel and Ancient Channel.(j)
