Data collection and sorting:
The presentation of complete websites
requires the support from massive data and hence how to
collect such data and classify, learning to delete
unnecessary content, is an important skill.
Practice summarization and concluding key issues to
enhance writing ability:
When we face
with massive data in the process, we must continue to
take training and learn to skim for key issues. We draw
mind mapping from the process to assure the framework of
the website. We routinely and constantly practice
writing journal and review in order to skim for the key
activity content from each assembly. The interview data
are also the results of us listening to massive audio
recording files and skimming for key issues.
Strengthening oral expression ability:
The questions raised during interview and
the requests and explanations to students and teachers
in school prior to conducting the questionnaire survey,
as well as the different promotions conducted on
students have helped us become more eloquent in the
process of learning how to explain and communicate with
others. |

Quantify and sort questionnaire data
After we collected the questionnaires
survey from the school, we used the statistics system
from Google Form to calculate on the data we collected
in order to quantify the results.

Visit hometown humanistic and natural landscape
The surveys show us the local and
deliberate maintenance from the local area to the
channel while the multiple ecological techniques for
building channel even preserve the natural landscape of
the local channel, infused into beautiful scenery where
humanity and nature co-exist.
Connecting with hometown local culture and emotion
We constantly visited inside the ancient
channel in this activity to understand the profound
association between the channel and local public. We
also understand the local economic development from the
process as well as the resident’s care for channel and
cherishing on the channel through the talks with the
residents. |

Acquaintance with relevant irrigation facilities
We have learned many techniques related to channel such
as U-shaped gutter, open tunnel…etc. We also learn that
the massive water flow brought by natural disaster or
excess daughter will have tremendous impact on the local
channel and even livelihood finance. The planning for
these facilities becomes increasingly important.
Acquaintance with animal and plant ecology
We could see the distribution of local
ecology in the channel preserved with considerably
abundant animal and plant resources. We hope to find an
ecology classroom from this seriously damaged city to
truly interact with nature.
producing eco-friendly leave catching net
Large amount of fallen leaves could block
the channel and so we reuse things in life and
spontaneously participate in channel clean-up to improve
the entire channel. |

color colocation, and the design and plan for small
components of the website. |

Learning to cooperate and help each other in order to
efficiently conduct the activity
We all need to conduct internal
communication and determine how to cooperate in
assembly, visit or promotion to the school, ebfore
executing these scheduled plans in order.
Self and local connection
Acquaint with locality is the key content
of our activity. We constantly consult with relevant
units and talk to local residents for issues, or ask
farmers and stores in local area to understand the local
tourism. We expect to connect with the local area
emotionally and understand that there is one place in
hometown that merits our visit and learning.

3.In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your Cyberfair project both on-line and in person.
|
Our goal is to help people acquaint with
Pingding ancient channel and hence we expressed our
intention of production from the maintenance unit,
personnel of Chi-Sing Irrigation Association. We had the
opportunity to meet with the Chairman and after
listening to our goal to introduce this place to more
people, the Chairman asked Mr. Lin and Leader Zhou from
the Association to company us through the channel. After
knowing our intent to understand local situations
in-depth, Mr. Lin and Leader Zhou even invited local
resident Mr. A-Jiang and former village head
Commissioner Zhou to introduce the local humanity and
history to us. Meanwhile we visit the local farmers and
understand the local tourism development in-depth. We
decided to introduce this area to school teachers and
students in addition to conducting promotion acivity. In
the activity content, we continued to learn how to form
questions, selection questions, and consult and talk
with people from different areas and fields with
considerable amount of harvest. We also identify with
the culture of our hometown more.
|
4.How
did your project involve other members of your community
as helpers and volunteers? |
Before conducting this topic, members
of our team did not know that Yangmingshan still
preserves channel with such long period of history.
When we visited the channel for the first time, we
discovered that the tree channels are still used for
important agriculture and livelihood water locally.
What surprises us more is that although we have
learned about channel, it has been a valuable
experience for us to contact and experience in
person that could not otherwise be acquired from
textbook.
After conducting interview about
channel with the personnel of Irrigation Association
and local residents, we understand that the local
residents live in a simple lifestyle and their focus
of life is farming. Unlike the general busy life of
Great Taipei, we discovered their true love for
Pingding Ancient channel from the conversation with
them, and they would first think about if the
channel has been destroyed in times of windy or
raining days and even typhoon days. I was really
touched because it is too easy to acquire anything
in the society we live today. After watching their
actions, their valuation and conservation of water
make us feel much ashamed, as we always take water
in life for convenience and waste water. Upon
returning to school, we asked the teachers and
students if they knew about Pingding ancient
channel, and most of them did not know about this
area. This really surprised us because this area is
located in the same administrative district as
Jiantan Elementary School but few people knew about
his place. Moreover, we discovered from our survey
that many students did not know what the real
purpose of channel. We thought that it would have
been a pity if the culture and wisdom left by
predecessors just disappeared like this, so we
decided to prepare and promote this interesting
place to all students in school.
After promotion, people started to
discuss more and we were happy about it. However we
also remembers what the former local village head,
Commissioner Zhou said, “The local residents do not
necessarily want to improve the tourism here but
only expect everyone coming here to care for the
channel like us. Buy some vegetables and fruits
before getting off the mountain and heading home,
showing support for farmers here would be good
enough.” We hope that this survey and promotion will
help more people cherish these rare and valuable
natural resources around us.

5.Consulting Intellectual Property Rights and Explaining Citations.
|
The test of website, origin of channels,
history and development until today, come from the
interview, data collection, photos, and complied
Pingding channel related information collected by
members of “ancient channel secret exploring team” from
Chi-Sing Irrigation Association and local residents. The
questions of questionnaire consist of ideas from
members, which are made into questions for teacher
questionnaire and student questionnaire.. The photos and
text introducing animals and plants in channel are taken
from in-field survey and the introduction made by
Teacher Wei-Ling Chen to the members. The relevant
literature data on Pingding channel have been authorized
by Chi-Sing Irrigation Association with consent. The
interview with local residents and peripheral stores
have all been agreed for publication on the website. |
6.What influences or
impacts did you receive from this research project?
|
Before doing the project, channels were
just a term about farmland irrigation which we read from
social study textbook. However after actual
participation in the channel activity and designing a
series of activities for them, we found out that
channels are closely related to their life. Moreover
such channels with simple structure are hidden with
no-so-simple manufacturing method with proximity to
nature and rich humanity history. This is something we
have never discovered before.
When we conducted interview with people
from Irrigation Association and local residents and
distributed questionnaire to teachers and students in
school, we were all very nervous before working on it
because we worried that we would not perform well. The
first time we stood on stage and faced with nearly all
students in school, reporting our discovery from the
channel, we were also nervous and we kept practice
during winter vacation. Fortunately these experiences we
learned helped us overcome our weakness and do our best.
It is the bet lesson we have learned.
The most surprising part of the
project production was the various functions built by
the channel. For example, the some areas of the channel
are would be excavated for gutter to provide water for
the survival of small fish and shrimp in times of dry
channel. The channel built with stacked rocks will leave
seams in the middle for small fish and shrimp to hide.
The metal fence in channel tunnel are deliberately
design in horizontal direction for bats living inside to
fly in and out more easily. These small ingenuities show
us the profound love and natural presentation of
Chi-Sing Irrigation Association and local residents.
This is the most surprising part of the project.
