In our first survey interview, Big Brother Lin from Irrigation Association once mentioned that the Irrigation Association would conduct three manual weeding activities for Pingding Ancient Channel in every March, September and November. Our research time coincidentally was close to the November so we asked the Association to revisit the Ancient Channel and experience the weeding activity. Thanks to Big Brother Zhou of the Irrigation Association and he invited the channel patrol, Grandpa A-Jiang to show us the weeding methods. Big Brother Zhou and Grandpa A-Jiang told us that the reason for manual weeding was because this method could better remove the weeds on the sides of the channel from the root, in comparison with machinery weeding, so that the weed will not grow again quickly and spread to the channel, resulting in channel blockage.

Apart from weeding, Big Brother Zhou also arranged for us to visit the hydroelectric power station in Pingdeng Elementary School. This activity was unscheduled and we have really learned a lot. With the introduction by Director Li from Pingdeng Elementary School, we observed the cooperation between Pingdeng Elementary School and Rotary Club to introduce the water from Dengfong Channel and produce simple hydroelectric power station, providing the power for nine lightbults and a small robot. The students of the school are able to learn environmental protection related knowledge through daily life.

We discovered that channel maintenance was no easy task from this weeding activity. These channel patrols have worked very hard to maintain the original look of the channel for the last one hundred years. Moreover, we visited the simple hydroelectric power station in Pingdeng Elementary School to acquaint with preliminary knowledge on hydroelectric power and we also admire the school for the profound influence on local residents in terms of life, economy and education.
