The three Channels of Pingding Ancient Channel are situated in the area between Pingdeng Village and Xishan Village of Shilin District, Taipei City. The terrain is high and flat, forming a river valley plateau, and is now designed into a preservation area. In particular, the Pingding Ancient Channel Hiking Trail among the three trails is under the administration of Yangmingshan National Park. Currently the three Channels are maintained and management by the Chi-Sing Irrigation Association.(h)

The entire Channel is situated on southwest of Yangmingshan National Park, formed through intercepting Qingtiangang Creek (formerly known as Pinglinkeng Creek), and the upstream of Neishuang Creek. The scope includes: bordered with Neishuang Creek and Xili Village on the east, adjacent to Taipei Wanli on northeast, and connecting with Pingxi Industrial Road to the Mingde Theme Park in Xishan Village on southeast. On the west are Zhusong Mountain and Qinhu Creek Valley, bordered with Qinshan Village and connecting with Pingqin Street; adjacent to Gongguang Village on the southwest and bordered with Qinhu Creek Valley and Xinshan Village on the south.

In view of the location of water intake height of the three Channels, the location of ancient Channel is the highest, followed by the new Channel with Dengfong Channel being the lowest. The height above sea levels of the Channels is 468, 434 and 426 meters respectively.(a) In particular, the Pingding Old Channel intersects the New Channel through Pinglin Creek water flowing from Erwei Mountain through Neicu Creek. Pingding New Channel flows to Pingdeng Station from Pinglin Creek, draining from Erwei Mountain, through Neichu Creek. Lastly, Dengfong Channel flows to Pingdeng Elementary School from Xiangdui Creek, draining from Erwei Mountain, through Neicu Creek. (p)

The height above sea level of Pingding Ancient Channel falls between 400 to 600 meters. The annual average temperature is about 3~6 degrees lower than the average temperature in the city. Spring times are misty while summer and autumn are cool and pleasant. The Northeast Monsoon is prevalent in winter with wet climate. The region of Pingding Ancient Channel is commonly known as the Inner Mountain among the local residence, where the ecological resources are abundant, and becomes the ideal place for summer getaway in tourists and hikers.(b)
