Calligraphy Master Tsu-ho Yu

Is there any difference between writing on paper and writing on walls of Wen Wu Temple?

It's more difficult to write on walls because the ink will flow down along with the wall. It's more challenging because it's a huge task. I am not tall enough to write calligraphy smoothly. Therefore, I have to write calligraphy with more static features.

What are the notices and difficulties for writing calligraphy on walls?

You certainly have to prepare for calligraphy tools, and the ink should not be too thick or thin. If it is too thin, it will drip. You have to write the characters with more static features that you are good at and avoid writing anything wrong. If you write anything wrong, the wall has to be painted again. Therefore, you can’t make mistakes. Besides, because the wall surface is not smooth, it's difficult to stamp a seal.

Will all masters write calligraphy on site?

Some of the masters are too old to write on site because it's not suitable for them to climb up and down the scaffold. The calligraphy works on that day were written by calligraphy masters at the age of approximately 40-60.

Tung-yuan Wu (in his 80) climbed up the scaffold on that day. However, he just made a draft, and then requested workers to paint it. The calligraphy works on the wall are usually written by younger calligraphy masters in person.

What's the influence of ink thickness?

When you write calligraphy on the wall, the ink will flow down. When I wrote calligraphy on that day, the organizer prepared the ink, which was blended with cement paint.

Why were you chosen to write calligraphy for Wen Wu Temple?

I have a good interpersonal relationship (joking). The prerequisite is certainly good calligraphy skills. One of my friends in Lukang was responsible for organizing the calligraphy works, so he asked me to write calligraphy there. He also asked several calligraphy masters from “Bangang Calligraphy Society.”
