Principal Hsueh-che Shih

Mr. Shih, born and raised in Lukang, was a retired elementary school principal. He won the first place in calligraphy competition of faculties in Changhua County.

Q1: What are the notices or conditions for writing calligraphy on walls?

A1: It's more difficult to write calligraphy on walls because the ink must be thicker and it takes more skills. When you write with your brush, you have to prevent the ink from dripping. Therefore, you have to control the strength of your brush and write calligraphy smoothly. Besides, you also have to watch out for the scaffold for the height of calligraphy.

Q2: Did you particularly prepare yourself for writing calligraphy on the walls of Wen Shrine?

A2: I followed my heart to write calligraphy. I remember that I wrote calligraphy with both hands at the time. Some of the words were opposite because I practiced them using ball pens and then had them transferred to calligraphy.

Q3: Did you write calligraphy on site at other occasions?

A3: In 2011, a calligraphy professor from Mainland China visited Lukang, and Changhua County Bureau of Cultural Affairs arranged to let the calligraphy master from Mainland China and local calligraphy masters in Lukang write calligraphy on site in Fuhsing barn. The 3 calligraphy masters from Mainland China wrote calligraphy first, and then Taiwanese masters wrote it. At the time, I was the oldest one, who originally intended to take a look only. Eventually, everyone asked me to write calligraphy. Therefore, I borrowed two brushes, and wrote calligraphy on a couplet with both hands at the same time. The couplet was not signed and stamped, but it was taken away by a Chinese professor.

Afterthoughts: Mr. Shih is not only a calligraphy master, but also an educator. He won numerous prizes in his life, including the instructor prize for nationwide 1st place of science fair and instructor prize for countywide 1st place of gymnastics. He is an honorable person for us to look up to. He also took out a giant calligraphy work for us to appreciate, and we were grateful for that
