Origin of academy

Name of the academy: In 1824, Lukang's official Chuan-an Teng was deeply impressed by Lukang's popular style of writing, but there was no place for students to concentrate on learning. Thus, he advocated building the academy. The academy was named Wenkai to memorize Guang-wen Shen, a famous scholar in the late Ming Dynasty. Guang-wen Shen (styled himself as “Wenkai” and “Si An”) who came to Taiwan in the period of Dutch occupation to teach Chinese immigrants to read and write, was hailed as the ancestor of Taiwan's Han culture.
