As we passed by the mullet roe store on Lukang Old Street, the golden mullet roe attracted us. We stopped to watch the mullet roe laying flat under the sun in winter. The tanned mullet roe is the best!
Origin of the mullet roe
(Figure 1) Mullet roe has a membrane. It’s edible after salted and dried. The white substance over mullet roe is its cover, which is used to prove whether a mullet roe is real. The mullets sold by Mr. Lin are caught from Lukang’s ocean and are the freshest food.
Distinguishing between real and fake mullet roe
(Figure 2) A real mullet roe has visible veins if we check it under the sun. A frozen mullet roe lasts longer. There are two kinds of mullet roe: the farmed ones smell less natural, but the wild ones are bigger and smell and taste better.
Mullet roe is very popular among tourists
(Figure 3) Mr. Lin said mullet roe was more expensive than Gold before, so only rich people can afford it. Both Mullet roe and French foie gras are gourmet foods of the same class. We are able to enjoy the gourmet food that is in the same class as French foie gras in Lukang without flying to France! Some people would prefer buying mullet roe rather than gold!
