Interview process

“Where are you from?” I say.

“I am born in Taipei.” she says.

“So what was the opportunity for you to visit Donghe?” I say.

“I visited Donghe for surfing, and as I arrived here, I fell in love with this place!” she says. “The landscape is beautiful, the climate is very comfortable, and the waves are wonderful, so I decided to settle down in here.”

“How long have you surfing? When did you start to surf?” I say.

“I have already surfed for 13 years, beginning when I was 27.” she says.

“Could you share to us your first surfing experience?” I say.

“I love any kind of aquatic activity, including playing water on the beach and swimming. The first time I surfing, I felt quite fun but also nervous, because I had to control the huge surfboard myself, that is not a piece of cake. However, everything was fresh and interesting!” she says.

“Having participate so many surfing competition, what is the most impressive experience?” I say.

“The most impressed one is the international surfing competition in Thailand, all of the surfers are approximately male. I made to the semi-final, the others competitors were skillful and well-known surfers in that area. That was a hyper-competitive game, especially the other surfers are male. Eventually, I won the first runner-up in that competition.” she says. “When I mentioned I am from Taiwan, they was very surprised because they couldn’t imagine it would have such a talented surfer in Taiwan.”

“So many surfing places you have been to, what is the place that you most enjoy?” I say.

“In Taiwan, Donghe, Hekou, and Jinzun are the excellent surfing place I like most.” she says.

“Have you been suffered a setback or trouble during surfing?” I say.

“Sport injury. I love this kind of sport, it is a part of my life. As I received injuries carelessly, I felt I suddenly lost the heart of my life! After that game I torn my meniscus in America, I back to Taiwan and had surgery, the following rehabilitations were painful, but I went over it. After three weeks, I could back to surfing again! The sport injury is the worst thing in my life.” she says.

“The sport injury is hard to avoid. How can you overcome the fear of injury?” I say.

“You must have to warm yourself, especially in winter. One time I torn my back, and I felt bad whether I sat or laid down. Then, I ask the doctor and he said the injury of my back was due to the lack of warm up, so after that I always warm myself completely and carefully to make sure I can be in better heath situation.” she says.

“Surfing for many years, what did you learn from surfing? Or something lead you develop yourself?” I say.

“Surfing make me treasure and take a good care of nature, and I also try to affect my family to love the nature, too. We are sharing the gift of nature, so we must feel thankful for everything.” she says.

“What do you want to say to the people which is trying to surf in the first time?” I say.

“They must have the right way to learn how to surf. You need the professional coach to teach you how to use surfboard correctly, and having the knowledge of sea conditions. Surfing is not just standing on the surfboard, but also understand the properties of sea current. And you have to know your distance to enjoy the surfing without danger.” she says. “Many people ask me that can they learn how to surf if they cannot swim? I think the answer is YES! However, people surf well do swim. Some people, who cannot swim in the beginning, in order to arrive the outside of the sea to have the better surfing waves try to learn how to swim spontaneously. So if you truly love surfing, you will try to swim well for surfing.” she says.

“What is your plan about surfing and anything else in the future?” I say.

“I will still participate international competitions. Also I will popularize surfing, usually in summer, since it would safer due to the smaller waves to have an introduction to fresh surfers. Recently, the surfing team of Daxi elementary school in Yilan is going to hold off-site training to Donghe, I will be here to play the security and supporting roles, and I provide my house for lodging. In the future, I hope that the school and surfing course could combine together, Donghe elementary school is the one which is undergoing the combination, It take three mouths to spread the surfing in summer vacation. If the students themselves and their parents are willing to continue the training of surfing, they can earn a better equipment by surfing competition, it can teach the students ‘no pain, no gain.’, but the prerequisite condition is their parents agree with the further training. Actually, it is a terrific region to popularize surfing, here has wonderful location. Some school also wants the surfing course, but we found that it is not quite suitable in another location after our discussion. So children in here are very lucky, they have great surfing place and human resource. If we could combine the neighboring villages to popularize surfing and hold surfing competitions together, we can enhance the level of surfing in this place.” she says.
