April 25, 2014 Searching the topic

Topic for discussion: Searching an appropriate project topic

Because the IT teacher introduced, we started contacting website-building. At the same time, I started searching the topic we preferred. The topics we found were included below:

  1. Taiwanese food: Beef noodles
  2. Beitou history: Hot springs
  3. Taiwanese culture: Blue-while slippers
  4. Environmental restoration: biological park

Then, we searched some relevant materials about each of the topics and discussed. Each of the group members expressed what they thought about their preference. Then, we voted and had the final decision. To understand it more, we decided to go see mountain-cleaning or beach-cleaning events then.

Topic for discussion: beach-cleaning

We wanted to have a real experience, so we went to do beach-cleaning. The reasons we did it were mainly addressed below:

  1. To experience the beach-cleaning event.
  2. Roughly to tell what environmental protection is and difficulties it has from the experience.
  3. To know tourists’ thoughts about the issues of environmental protection.

The results showed that we had many thoughts about the environmental protection issue. Meanwhile, we found that most of the tourists we interviewed did not really know environmental protection events although they know it important. We also found that there was not a channel for them to understand it clearly and thoroughly.

Topic for discussion: mountain-cleaning

  1. To experience a mountain-cleaning activity.
  2. To reconsider the garbage and environmental protection problem while doing mountain-cleaning.
  3. To know how the garbage was recycled.

After experiencing the mountain- and beach-cleaning activities, we seemed to have more touched and wanted to study carefully about the environmental protection issue. We recorded what we felt and found during the process of the activities and shared our thoughts with one another in our team. Then, we decided to go further consulting more relevant reference material of the theme and also see whether Taiwan has any application of ecological restoration.

Topic for discussion: deciding the final project topic

  1. To visit the two parks and make a comparison between them.
  2. To prepare the equipment for ground fielding.

To set up a date of ground fielding.

We found there were two ecological parks in Taipei: one is Shanshuilu Ecological Park and the other is Fude Park. Therefore, we went to see the difference between the two. After visiting the two parks and making a comparison, we found that we preferred Shanshuilu because it was closer to what we wanted: a real case of environmental restoration. Then, we set up the date for the next visit.

Topic for discussion: ground fielding

  1. To understand clearly about the definition of ecological parks.
  2. To observe the devices and utilities in the park.
  3. To enjoy visiting the park as tourists.
  4. To search whether there were any residents that we could interview.

We went to Shanshuilu Eco-Park again because we wanted to know how this ecological park was formed, including the meaning of the restoration, equipment, management, etc. We wanted to search our first impression about the park. Then, we were touched by its devices of art and concepts of recycling such as the paneled clock, the rainbow bridge, recycled bikes, and walls of garbage. After visiting the whole park, we made some notes and decided to solve our problem by reading first. It seemed we did not really find possible residents for our interview. Therefore, we decided to do it next time—to know more about the park including the residents’ and tourists’ thoughts.

Topic for discussion: ground fielding

  1. To search possible residents and tourists.
  2. To observe the plants and animals in the park.
  3. To record the strength and weakness of the park.
  4. To sketch our website.

While investigating this park this time, we discussed what facilities we wanted to introduce. Likewise, we found many kinds of animals and plants there, so we decided to put them in our record. We found most of the tourists came here for outing, so we decided our questions for the questionnaire. As to the interview target, we decided to visit the chief although we did not know whether she would accept our interview. We finally gave an outline of our website.

We contacted the chief of the village and she agreed to see us, so we decided the date. Then, we listed many questions and discussed with our teachers. 1. To visit the chief of the village.

We were surprised with the chief’s passion and enthusiasm. She answered all the questions we prepared for her. In addition, she said something we did not think of. Meanwhile, she introduced some residents for us to interview. She also suggested us participating in the activity—brewing sweet osmanthus tea. The residents’ hospitality made us feel: Taiwanese people are so friendly and nice. We small potatoes were so satisfied with this trip.

Topic for discussion: visiting the Bureau of Environmental Protection in Taipei

  1. To watch the film of landfills
  2. To visit the landfill
  3. To figure out the problem we had

We would like to know the bureau’s position towards Shanshuilu, so we visited the Bureau of the Environmental Protection and prepared some questions for this visit. To begin with, the bureau staff played the film to build up our background knowledge about the landfill and how the sources were recycled from the landfill. Then, he took us to the landfill to see the dirt/culvert sludge treatments. This trip made us understand the real situation, so we planned to revise the contents of our website again.
