  Preface

As the population on the globe is increasing rapidly, the conditions of the environment are getting worse. The earth’s climate, for example, has changed continually through the past. Over the century, the world has witnessed numerous disasters such as Haiti Earthquake (2010), Cyclone Nargis (2008), Hurricane Katrina (2005), and Indian Ocean Earthquake (2004). These natural disasters seem to occur in every corner of the world. Therefore, environmental issues have become legitimate concerns for discussion. Taiwan is no exception. However, good management of natural resources and the environment has been regarded as fundamentally important. While people keep extolling the importance of environment protection, what do we residents or the authorities in Taiwan make so far?

Many may take with nonchalance, but the residents and local officials in Chiuchuang Village have been silently making a great effort by tackling a large amount of waste and beautifying the community for years. Chiuchuang villagers have transformed the loathed and almost forgotten village (used to have a big landfill in it) to Shanshuilu Eco-Park, which is also known as green world ecological park in Taiwan and appreciated by many tourists. This transformation is like “the ugly, ungainly duckling becomes a beautiful swan.” Besides their hard work, everything seems as perfect and beautiful as the plan; however, behind the lofty ideal are hidden worries and obstacles. For that reason, our project aims to arouse people’s attention to environmental protection issues using Shanshuilu ecological park as an example. Meanwhile, as high school students studying in Shilin High School of Commerce, we hope to do some marketing for this forever green ecological environment, a recreation area with facilities and special beverages. We want to help Shanshuilu do some marketing to show our full support of environment protection. Most importantly, we want to convey the belief: “A small potato can make a difference for the world, but it needs everyone’s support; Shanshuilu Eco-Park is just one of the examples.”

In our project, apart from the introduction to the history and development of Shanshuilu Eco-Park in Chiuchuang, Taiwan, we also reported villagers’ and tourists’ responses to the park and gave implications and suggestions. The following is what we did in our project. First, to build enough knowledge of environmental protection, we first surveyed and read a lot of literatures about environment protection. Then, we did numerous times of field observation to see in what way the village contributed to environment protection. Next, to have more understanding of the village, we interviewed the related officials, including the chiefs of the village and official staff, who explained and demonstrated what they did for environment protection. Moreover, we conducted a questionnaire survey to know what tourists thought of the park. Their help is of enormous benefit to our project as well as us, high school students.
