The Education-The Academies

In 1736, the Ching Government actively established a lot of local academies for cultivating talents. As a result, the Changhua County Government established ¡§Bai Sha¡¨ Academy in 1746 and ¡§Ju Jing¡¨ Academy in 1811.The school discipline was strictly stipulated. However, the Changhua County Magistrate controlled all the administrative affairs, and the chief of the academy was only responsible for teaching students. The students got good grades would receive the scholarships in the academy. And the source of the scholarships was from the students¡¦ ¡§rents¡¨ or the business sponsors. So lots of cheating problems were caused at that time; the purpose of learning was wrongly explained as being a government officer.Several years later, Xu Zong Gan, the new Magistrate, decided to solve those problems of the academies. He declared that he would seriously punish the students who cheated or bribed in the academies. As a result, the students began to concentrate on studying and learning how to be excellent talents not to be bureaucrats.

The two academies, ¡§Bai Sha¡¨ Academy and ¡§Ju Jing¡¨ Academy, located Changhua City. The following is their introductions:

1.¡§Bai Sha¡¨ Academy

In 1746, the officer Zen Ze Ying donated his all salary to build this academy, and he also wrote down the school discipline in person. The name ¡§Bai Sha¡¨ means ¡§white sand¡¨ in Chinese according to the beautiful scenery of Changhua County.Until 1760, the Magistrate Chang Shi Zen ever repaired this academy. However, in 1787, ¡§Bai Sha¡¨ Academy was destroyed by the war and was rebuilt in another place by the Magistrate Song Shui Hao.

2. ¡§Ju Jing¡¨ Academy:
It located the Southern Gate of Confucius Temple and was originally a warehouse. The Magistrate Young Gui Sen intended to change this warehouse into a school. As a result, he hired some teachers and established this Academy especially for teaching those impoverished students.
