I’m 82 years old and I have been studying at night school for 12 years. I’m in 3rd grade now. At night school, I’ve taken Chinese music, social science courses, and have taken part in sports meet and singing contest. Before, I had to look after 5 grandchildren because their moms needed to work, but now I have time to go to school since my grandchildren have grown up. My youngest grandchild is at college now. However, I’m aged and my memory is bad that I forgot whatever I just leaned all the time. That why I enroll again and again after each time I graduate. I believe that I can learn everything as well as others. You should study hard while you are young.
Since I started studying at night school, I have learned how to consult the dictionary and how to read books, newspaper and subtitles on TV. My favorite subject is Chinese because I grew up in the Japanese-ruling period. I had received Japanese education for six years but it made me have no chance to learn Chinese characters.
The reason I join the studying group should be traced back to my life in the Japanese-ruling period. At that time, I had to help at home since there were so many members in my family. A girl like me didn’t have many opportunities to go to school.
When I was a child, school had a full schedule that we even had to go to school on Saturdays. And the teachers were very strict. If we didn’t listen to them or didn’t finish homework, we would not be allowed to go home and have dinner. Sometime our teachers even beat us with a wooden sword. I used to be a playful kid and now I am a playful senior.
It’s good of you that you don’t have to go to school during summer break. We had to take turns to clean the school then. When I was a kid, I had a better memory so that I learned math pretty well.
I’m satisfied with the night school curriculum. I can learn many Chinese characters with no pressure. Whenever I go to school, the memories of going to the Japanese school in my childhood just came to me and it makes me feel young. It’s fun to go to night school.
