I had no work at daytime. The reason I came to night school is to learn Chinese. It was my second year here. I think the strokes of Chinese characters are interesting. My favorite subject is Chinese. I hope I can learn Chinese well so I can teach my children at home.

I’m satisfied with the night school curriculum because the teachers are very earnest. Beside the courses we have now, I want to learn computer science. There are only a few families having computers at their home in Vietnam, so I will encourage new immigrants like me to go to school.

Most of the elementary schools run only half day from 7:00am to 12:00pm, while elementary schools here in Taiwan have a full-day schedule. And there are only five grades in elementary school system in Vietnam that once students graduate from elementary school they take the high school entrance exam. I can’t really recall what subjects I had before, except for Vietnamese and math.

In Vietnam, only elementary school education is mandatory. High school education is not. Classes are composed of both boys and girls, though boys and girls usually sit in different rows. And there is no uniforms for elementary school students.

I have learned many different things at night school and also made many good friends. When I just came to Taiwan, I didn’t go out often due to language barrier. However I go out more because I know more Chinese characters. Sometime when my 5-yea-old son asks me about the words he doesn’t understand, I can answer him.
