Night School Students: Lolo Cheng
My uncle took me to Taiwan during the war in 1949. I wasn’t here for military service so I couldn’t go back to mainland China. I was not able to do any job at first. However, I ran out of my money so I started to be a barber. It was a hard time that we need to do everything. I had run my barber shop for over 40 years and my son is even over 50 years old now. Not only does my faculty of memory fail me but also my sight. I have studied here for three academic years out of four successive years. The school was good, but I just had no time to finish my study every time I enrolled. The first time was because my son in the US invited me to visit him, and the second time was another son asking me to help him with his shop. So it is my third time to enroll this year. Being illiterate was really suffering. Kids should study hard and don’t be like me. I am eighty years old and am too old to do anything, evening walking. Since I was illiterate, I didn’t know about phonetic symbols so I had heavy accent when I talk. I want to learn phonetic symbols and hope I can thus speak Mandarin better. Besides, I lost some of my teeth and it was kind of awkward for me to talk. When you ask me questions, I am afraid if you can understand what I’m talking about. So I hope you kids can study hard and listen to your teachers, no matter you are a boy or a girl. I am satisfied with the night school program. Teachers are all good, and it’s my fault that I didn’t study well. When people are old, they always lose their ability to memorize.That’s why I suggest kids to study hard. Since I started studying at night school, I have been happy and vigorous. Speaking of the influence of studying at night school on my family, I feel myself more patient that I no longer lose my temper easily. For example, I can communicate better with my grandsons who speak Taiwanese now, even though I don’t speak Taiwanese. In addition, I treat my wife better too. Because I didn’t go to school when I was young, I was quite stubborn then. However, I am more reasonable after going to school. If you see someone at my age and doing nothing at home, you may ask him to join us.。 |
