Interview
1.How long have you been involved in the Wild Bird Society of Taipei?
I have been a volunteer for more than ten years. First, I participated in The Society of Wilderness. During the observation of nature, I found that birds are cute and happy creatures. Later, I joined the training of Wild Bird Society of Taipei volunteer, and many people watch birds together, and learn knowledge.
2.What should we do before the guided tour?
I’ll check it online. What kind of birds that have been recorded recently in Tianliaoyang? What kind of birds I am expecting to see? I can also read the illustrated handbook and review the difference between the birds that are similar. I would be happy to meet it when the bird really appears in front of me!
3.Which are the birds most worth introducing to the public by Tianliaoyang?
Tianliaoyang is different from other bird spots. When migrant birds are crossing the border, we can expect to see unexpected birds. Some birds are less likely to be seen at other bird spots. It is easy to observe Emberizidae on this bird spot. We can see black kite or Osprey catching fish at Tianliaoyang.
4.How did Tianliaoyang find out to plan a route?
At first, there may be birders who come to Tianliaoyang when the birds crossing the border, and then they find that there are many birds when at that time. Tianliaoyang is a biodiversity environment. When we maintain the environment well, there is no damage, there can be waters, streams, grasses, trees, shallow mountains, vast environment, then we will be cable to see more bird species.
5.What equipment do you generally need for bird watching?
It is better to have a telescope. If not, you can follow the volunteers of the Wild Bird Society of Taipei. We will provide telescopes for you to use. Then, you should take the illustrated handbook, paper and pens. Of course, it is now digitized. Sometimes it can be recorded directly on the e-bird app. You also have to take clothes, trousers, long sleeves shirt, hat, boiling water or food.
6.What do you personally feel about bird watching?
I think the fun of bird watching is that when you see birds outdoors, it seems to see good friends. And every time the friends you meet are different, they will surprise you and make you feel familiar.
7.How to get along with birds?
If you want to see the bird clearly, we must not disturb them. Try to lower the sound as much as possible, and then slowly approach it. Especially in the breeding season, the parent-birds may give up its nest and young birds if they see us. Then young birds will die because they are not taken care of by their own parent-birds. But some bird-watchers will play the sound of birds or feed the birds, and these behaviors are discouraged.

8.What do you think is the spirit of the Wild Bird Society of Taipei?
I think the spirits are appreciation, conservation, and research. We have a happy holiday owing to bird watching. We will also protect these birds, so that they can live in this world as humans freely. Research is in the process of bird watching, we will look through the illustrated handbook and compare, we can know more about bird knowledge and the methods of protecting birds, and also pass on this concept to more people, so that birds and humans can live in peace. In this way, more people can enjoy the joy of bird watching, but also protect birds together with us.
Conclusion
Appreciation, conservation, and research are the most important spirits of the Wild Bird Society of Taipei. We appreciate the beauty of birds from bird watching activities, we are worried about their increasingly poor habitats will affect their living spaces so we want to conserve them. Finally, we will study them and maintain the environment. This is the most important achievement from our bird watching activities, and also the biggest goal of these volunteer teachers.
