Project Elements

How did your activities and research for this International Schools CyberFair project support content standards, required coursework and curriculum requirements?

The special research itself is an interdisciplinary learning process, and these learning processes are closely related to school curricula. Therefore, doing research every time is equivalent to reviewing and integrating our achievements in school learning. In this study, we were also combining with many subjects to let students better develop their potentials.

In language

During this study, we used a huge amount of words to record; students needed to put what they heard, saw, understood and felt into words; therefore, it tested their language proficiency in school for further practical use.

In mathematics

During the questionnaire activities, students learned the use of pie charts, and digitally analyzed the students’ ideas, making our research more goal-oriented.

In society

The subject of research in the cyber space is often closely related to the surroundings of our lives, but we could also implement it through research, discovery of problems, analysis of problems, and then achieve problem-solving. This is the best way to put social textbooks into life.

In nature and technology

This study can be the best chance to show how computer skills the students have learned could expand through various researches, so as to enable the students to learn more about how to use computers to explore what they saw and thought into practical uses.

What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

IT software and hardware

In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person?

The purpose of CyberFair is hopefully through our effort to understand the bits and pieces of this land where we live, so the themes we looked for were "local”. Chi-Sing Irrigation Association is near our school, and has been there for over a century; but at the beginning, we did not know what Irrigation Association had to do with us; so we hoped that through our research, together with propagation, we could let everyone understand this local institution, and to appreciate how Irrigation Association has done a lot of effort to our farmland at the Guandu Plain, particularly how much effort they have put in the protection of water sources; thereafter to further deepen our common sense to protect the water sources and the idea to appreciate our water and land, then implement from daily life.

How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

"Since Taipei is a metropolitan, there should be no farmland, right?" This was our initial concept, but the special research made us better understand the Taipei City, we simply realized we were like the frogs at the bottom of the well. Through the study of the “Irrigation Association", we knew the Guandu Plain farmland, and we understood that in order to allow rice to grow smoothly, it is very difficult to obtain water sources and to maintain water quality; and when the water passes through the spa area at Singyi Road, sulfur gas is artificially added into the water, so it makes the water unusable for the farmland. Such result shocked us that the hot springs are not natural, but artificially processed; so we felt a bit guilty as we had experience in using hot springs, and we realized it really wasn’t easy to obtain good water.

Consulting Intellectual Property Rights and Explaining Citations

Most of the words and photos used in this research were compiled by “JTES agricultural and water” team after interviewing and investigating on site. We have informed the interviewees that the contents of our activities would be quoted in the thematic web pages, with their permission. Some of the literature and photos used in the website were approved and provided by Chi-Sing Irrigation Association, and re-designed by our team members; we would denote it on the webpage. We also used Google online resources or free software for compiling articles and editing photos this time so that we could use the software with positive attitude and reduce the inconvenience for purchasing software applications.

What influences or impacts did you receive from this research project?

For every study and research, we had different discoveries. We first found out that there were rice fields in Taipei, and the landscape in the neighborhood was just like at the country side. It opened our eyes as we were like "urban illiterate"; particularly, when we saw that the harvesters were working neatly among the agricultural fields, and the irrigation channels were flowing through them; it was like a secret garden of Taipei! And when we tried to understand the installation of waterway and the obtention of water sources, we learned good water wasn’t easy to get, because the water will change due to the pollution in the midway and it becomes a good water that can not be used for irrigation; it resulted in the animals and plants in the water wouldn’t survive and caused ecological disasters which eventually affect our life, so we indeed learned a lesson. At the final, when we investigated the source of problem and found out with shock that the water in the hot spring area is not natural but artificially processed; the processed water is the biggest culprit of water pollution. However, to change this situation, we need more people to know and to value it. So we hope that this study would enable more people to know the truth and affect more to understand and to work together and improve it.
