Responsibilities: sorting out and organizing materials, distributing tasks and conducting statistical analyses of the questionnaire.

The making of this website, from selecting teammates, distributing tasks and field trips, is very meaningful to me. I’ve learned about how to lead a team to approach its goal, and how to solve, and overcome challenges faced, and how to solve conflicts between team members. These are all elements that help me to grow and learn, as well as force me to constantly provide new information during the process. These are all rare experiences. Everyone is dedicated to this project and I am very grateful for everyone’s effort.

Responsibilities: sorting out and organizing materials, distributing questionnaires and collecting materials and information.

I’ve learned a lot from this project, with many first-time experiences, such as asking someone to fill up a questionnaire, conducting an interview, and collecting information and photos. Also, I got to learn about the history and culture of Bo-Pi Liao. I got to experience all these which is a very interesting form of group learning. We didn’t know how to start at the beginning, but under the instruction of our supervisor, we managed to dig into the subject. The beginning was not very smooth, since we sometimes had different opinions. Nevertheless, all problems were overcome by us. Each team member has tried to come up with many different ideas. By bringing everyone’s idea, opinions and concepts together, we accomplished this project.

Responsibilities: post-production of photos, distributing questionnaires and photographing . This is my first time building a website. After some research on the internet, we decided to head to the historic district in Wanhua—Bo-Pi Liao. From collecting relevant information to actually visiting the site, we discovered the transformation of the old houses as well as another story about the government, the corporations and the people When we arrived at Bo-Pi Liao, what we saw was not a modern forest of iron and steel, but old, flavorful brick buildings that have witnessed historical changes. In Junior High School, we were taught about the three major cities in Taiwan more than 200 hundred years ago--“Fucheng, Lugang and Mangka,” and we were standing in Mangka (Mengjia), which is Wanhua today. As for the origin of the name “Bo-Pi Liao,” we were told that the name was given because during the Qing period, a great amount of timbers of Chinese fir were shipped here for debarking. When we walked on the old street, we felt as if we had traveled in time and witnessed the glorious time. Soaked in these classic landscapes, which sometimes include some modern graffiti, this place integrates local cultures and modern innovations. Sometimes art exhibitions are also available. When heard of the term “Old street,” many people may associate it with stands and children’s games, which are not to be found here! .

Responsibilities: collecting materials, conducting the interviews and offering opinions.

In the past, all my impressions about Mengjia came from the move “Monga.” I only found out later that in Mengjia, there is such a place called “Bo-Pi Liao.” After visiting the place in person, I truly think this is a very unique place, in terms of its atmosphere, landscapes and buildings. Right after we got off the bus, I noticed that the surrounding buildings are all full of features. Every building has its historical side, and even food seemed old-school. What was most impressive to me was the streets inside Bo-Pi Liao. Every building on the streets is unique; they are built with red bricks without concrete and paints. When we saw that many people were painting there, I was even more impressed. Every passer-by slowed down their paces on purpose, afraid of disturbing the painters. This is a very special trip. Letting me know Mengjia is not just a name of a movie. If one further explores, one can discover the history of Mengjia and how its residents strive to preserve its original appearance despite all the challenges.

I only got to know Bo-Pi Liao as we started to collect information about it. Because of this project, I not only become familiar with its cultural landscapes and history, but also experienced the friendliness of local residents, which left me a strong impression. I am very grateful that our supervisor gave us the opportunity to carry out this project. She not only collected information with us, but also offered us many advices, thanks to which we were able to complete this project. Because of this experience, we found out that there is such a beautiful place in Taiwan and we hope that more people would fall in love with this flavorful historic site.

Responsibilities: designing and distributing the questionnaire, filling up the application form

While working on this project, besides of encountering many difficulties, we also acquired many precious experiences. Much knowledge can’t not be learned in class, such as designing a questionnaire, planning a trip and contacting interviewees. Some things seemed so small, but we had no idea how to tackle them. Because of it, we realized the importance of teamwork. This project is a truly unforgettable experience to us, because it is the result of our constant hard work, overcoming all questions and difficulties. When we finished the project, it felt like that all the efforts were worth it.

Responsibilities: offering opinions, distributing questionnaires and post-production of photos .

This is my first time working on such project after becoming a high school student; such opportunities were not available before. In addition to visiting historic monuments, I also acquired knowledge that is not mentioned in textbooks. Flavorful historical buildings, friendly local residents and the precious memory of the field trips, every step has taught us a great deal. I want thank my teammates for helping and tolerating each other, to complete this project. We picked the spots and took photos together, we asked local residents and visitors to fill up our questionnaire. These unforgettable experiences were all because of this project. I am also grateful that our supervisor gave us the opportunity to work on this project, which has painted a beautiful rainbow in our school life.

Responsibilities: work journals, conducting the interview and distributing questionnaires

During this trip, I was most touched by a tour guide from the Heritage and Cultural Education Center. Listening to his account of Bo-Pi Liao’s history, I felt like I fell in a time tunnel! Every time when he mentioned a new site I felt like I was there, being able to experience the situation at that time. When I asked him about how to transform Bo-Pi Liao and to protect local cultures, there were sparks in his eyes. Listening to his detailed expectations of Bo-Pi Liao, I was made aware of his strong affection for the place, so strong that others can barely imagine. As time changes, we see many important advancements, but important history and cultures have been sacrificed for these advancements. His insistence on protecting Bo-Pi Liao is worth our admiration and learning. I hope more and more people would value our history and cultures, as well as extending these cultures and history.

Bo-Pi Liao is full of artistic and cultural flavors, with many views that one can’t see on any other streets, such as a store house divided into two parts, with the front used as a shop and the back as a private home. Also, there are 2-storied houses built with adobe wall, whose roof is coved by red bricks. Both the east and the west side remind one of an earlier time, preserving the original appearance from the Qing period and Japanese Rule Era. On the east side is also the Heritage and Cultural Education Center, who also helped us with our project. The guide introduced to us in details about Bo-Pi Liao, so we became more familiar with it.

By participating in this contest, we are given a lovely memory. In charge of art design, it was sometimes inevitable for me to face difficulties or feel frustrated. However, my teammates tried to give me advices, so that the project could be successfully finished. This is a very good experience for us. Even though we may not receive the highest award, at least we all did our best, and I hope we’ve all grown up a bit.

All you could find here is the combination of history, culture and workshops. On the old walls are some simple plain colors, which are very comforting for they remind one of his/her childhood. Located in a commercial area in an earlier time, the introduction of western cultures had resulted in different designs of houses, creating many mixtures of the eastern and western style, which are also full flavor. As time always flies when one feels happy, our trip also reached its end. I think preserving such a historic district not only expands the horizon of our generation, but also preserves a piece of important history of Taiwan. Most importantly, it continues to spread the Taiwanese spirit.
