Danbei Orphanage

 

Located behind Xuehai Academy, which is Yan Chai Hospital today, Danbei Orphanage was established in 1869 by Tamsui officials Chen Pei-Gui and local residents. In the old days, as living condition was harsh, the bad practice of abandoning infants or drowning female infants were often heard. Therefore, the local community decided to form an orphanage to foster homeless children or provide them financial assistance.

 

          


 

Yangji Hospital in Mengjia

 

Founded in 1879, the hospital provided in-patient services as well as cash or in-kind benefits. During the Japanese Rule Era, Yangji Hospital, the orphanage, Tong Sun society, the female orphanage and Huei-Chun Hospital (treating ill travelers) were integrated and Renji Hospital was founded, turning from a charitable organizations to a hospital. It also took in psychiatric patients.

 

           

  


Love-Love Home in Monga (Menjia)

 

While conducting a social survey, Shih Chien (1899-1944) discovered that there were many beggars and homeless people living in a very harsh condition in Mengjia district, and therefore, decided to devote himself to social welfare. In 1922, he founded Love-Love Home, taking in homeless people and psychiatric patients and teaching them life skills. He was a pioneer of social welfare.
