Preface

We decided to choose Bo-Pi Liao as the theme for our project because of its historic value. The district was kept intact during the Qing period and the Japanese Rule Era; afterwards, the district was preserved because of public protests. Its cultural features are very appealing to us. Why did local residents fight to preserve this district? This is the beginning of our curiosity. It is also uncommon that this place can be preserved in one of the golden city district of Wanhua. Bo-Pi Liao is a historic street that documented Wanhua’ glorious days. It must be of great importance so that it could be preserved, and this is a question worth exploring.

Both in the Qing dynasty and the Japanese Rule Era, this had been a commercial hotspot in northern Taiwan, and therefore, Qing-styled streets and the Japanese-styled townhouses with an arched façade have been preserved. Buildings that combine Min-nan and Baroque style have been kept intact, forming unique historical buildings. The Japanese government launched a series of urban reform projects, which altered the original appearance of Bo-Pi Liao, widening and strengthening the previously narrow and curvy road, contributing the convenient traffic. Walking on a street with so many historical stories and meanings and surrounded by the historic buildings is something we’ve never experienced and particularly meaningful to us. As a group of high school students born in the 1980s, we are now able to understand the stories and life styles in the past, and we also hope to promote Bo-Pi Liao to more people, so that everyone could learn about its history and pass it on to the next generation. .
