Heritage and Culture Education Center

At the intersection of Kangding Road, Guangzhou Street, and Kunming Street in Wanhua District, Taipei City, Bo-Pi-Liao Historic District contains abundant local culture, entitling itself to be the perfect place for heritage and culture education. A centuries-aged Lao-Song Elementary School is adjacent to the historic district which has been designated as land for school use because of an urban development plan since the Japanese Rule Era. A series of levy compensation had worked out from 1988 to June of 1999, the time when Taipei City decided "Conservation and Reutilization Policy of Bo-Pi-Liao". As planned, Bo-Pi-Liao was levied and reserved as a school land, and developed under the framework of cultural asset conservation and local culture education combined.

Renovation and Reutilization Project (Phase One) of Bo-Pi-Liao Old Street East Part was approved by the urban design commission in October of 2002 and started construction in July of 2003. The Education Department of Taipei City Government established a Bo-PiLiao reutilization operating team in August of 2003, named "Heritage and Culture Education Center of Taipei City (HCEC)" to incarnate the idea of "Educational ground roots in the historical street; the historical street was revived by educational activities.”

Exhibitions of various vivid and vigorous topics are held in HCEC which has made it a good field trip destination for students. Additionally, HCEC actively developed out local materials and folk activities of all sorts for teaching, in pursuit of resource sharing, as an assistant in Taipei's heritage and culture education, and for a future in which education and culture coexist in prosperity.

HCEC grandly opened on February 23, 2006, and became a place where all people love to learn local knowledge, a place where instills vigor into Taipei City's local culture education, and even a good site for a cultural tour. This center is already a model for its revitalization of this historic street.
