※Little Weather Angels -- Reflections on the Interview
After reading master Lu Quan-En’s book, watching news report about him, and some introduction from school teachers, we were looking forward to visit master Lu and his weather station. With proper preparation, we arrived at his house according to our appointment and began our first face-to-face interview. We were able to talk with him at close range, listened to his learning process, the history and hardships about building the weather station. It was a important lesson outside of our regular class – either about weather or life. The following are our reflections on Team Pika’s interview of master Lu Quan-En: |
Master Lu Quan-En interviewed by team Pika at his house
|
Dun-Qi’s reflections Mr. Lu Quan-En is a weather master. In junior high school, he began to read some books about weather. Once he finished reading one book, he would save money to buy another one of his favorite weather books. He has been doing this for forty years. His passion for weather is unstoppable. His perennial research and records give people in Changhua weather data as accurate as Central Weather Bureau for many years. In the beginning, master bought weather instruments and put it on the roof of his house. Typhoons damaged these instruments. He did not have enough budgets to repair them, so he held a fundraising online. There are little donations because he is not famous enough. However, master Lu never gives up. Along the way he faces many difficulties and ordeals, but he overcomes them with his persistence. When he tried to establish Silver Star weather station, his family was against his idea. His passion for weather propelled him to do it, so we can have such accurate weather information today.
Master Lu Quan-En’s office is not as big as I imagined. The thing that leaves the most lasting impression on me is the obsolete ladder before we climb up to the roof. Hearing all the creaking sounds from wooden ladder when classmates climb up makes me extremely nervous. This makes me think about how master Lu feels when he has to climb up these two ladders time after time. I feel it is his passion which drives him to keep going! After climbing up to the roof, I am amazed by a superb collection of weather instruments. These instruments help him making more accurate prediction on paths of typhoons than Central Weather Bureau. As a little kid, it is the level I dream of! After this interview, I feel we should learn more from master Lu’s tireless spirit and passion for his dream. In addition to open our eyes with his professional knowledge, he also makes me realize that I should bravely chase my dream and hang on to it. Yi-Tin’s reflections
Teachers and parents drive us safely to master’s house. Master is very enthusiastic about our visit. We follow his footsteps to a narrow room upstairs. We see an altar table and many weather instruments when we enter the room. Master invites us to sit in a circle and Mr. Chong-Qin along with our captain begin to ask. We follow them by asking our prepared questions. Master is very patient and answers them one by one. It turns out he has already been doing this for more than 30 years. He has very comprehensive weather historical information and instruments. With the passion for his dream, he is able to do this for 30 years. We are very impressed while listening to his responses. Next is the most exciting part. We are going to climb up to the roof, to see his weather instruments. It is a private weather station, so it is kind of dangerous climbing the ladder to the roof. The ladder has two floors, and usually the section connected to the roof is the most dangerous. It is easier climbing up than down. Climbing down is definitely more scary. My legs cannot stop shaking when climbing down. Our captain is very brave no matter how scary it is. He climbs up and down like a monkey, and he has injured hands and legs that day! We actually want to see him jumping down without the ladder! After this exciting adventure, our visit also comes to an end. We are ready to bid our farewell to master. Before we leave, we give a little gift and appreciation certificate to him. We are thankful to him for this interview. A happy end to this interview trip. I think master Lu Quan-En is really remarkable. His interest in weather started at young age. In order to study weather, he continued to save money for books in junior high school. He has been working on this for more than 30 years. His spirit is worth learning. I am very thankful for his support and encouragement. I also thanks to our advisory teachers for their preparation on this visit, so it went smoothly. I can have a valuable learning experience! |
