※Little Weather Angels -- Reflections on the Interview
After reading master Lu Quan-En’s book, watching news report about him, and some introduction from school teachers, we were looking forward to visit master Lu and his weather station. With proper preparation, we arrived at his house according to our appointment and began our first face-to-face interview. We were able to talk with him at close range, listened to his learning process, the history and hardships about building the weather station. It was a important lesson outside of our regular class – either about weather or life. The following are our reflections on Team Pika’s interview of master Lu Quan-En: |

Yu-Hong’s reflections
In the beginning, we wait a very long time at Hemei High School. When teachers finally decide to set off our visit, I swiftly put information about the interview into my bag. I am very excited when we arrive and find out (Silver Star weather station) is in a normal Hemei alley. On the road to his house, I cannot stop thinking about how master determined to follow his dream.
After entering master Lu Quan-En’s office, I see a row of observation instruments and many weather history graphs on the wall. I can’t help but dream of this exciting day ahead. After greeting with master Lu, we start to ask him some questions, such as “What kind of obstacles did he face when he established this station?” “What are his expectations for the future?” or “Does he have any protégées or successors?” During the interview, master shares the books he read when he’s little to us. I am almost fainted when I see the books are full of weather symbols. I cannot believe he is able to memorize a book this thick. I do not realize until now. If a person is interested in an expertise, he would put his heart and soul into studying, exploring it. Once he has learned the techniques, he would have a sense of accomplishment. After the interview, Mr. Chong-Qin proposes to see the station and we all agree in unison. I am very happy when I climb up to the station. A burst of winds blow through my face, and the view I look down from the roof is so beautiful. Master Lu Quan-En’s interest does not bring him more fortune, but he is willing to contribute his time and energy for the public. I am really humbled by his experience. He already had an ambitious dream when he was at my age. I am very embarrassed that I still don’t know what my goal is. Rui-Lin’s reflections
On the day of interviewing master Lu Quan-En, we gather at computer classroom of Hemei High School in early morning. Mr. Yang uses a little time to make sure our preparation is ready. He also gives us some notices. After we are ready, first we take photos in front of the stage in the sports field, and then we set out on our teacher and parents’ cars to master Lu’s house. Captain and I are on Miss Wang Jia-Wen’s car, and she asks if we are ready for the interview. Captain and I both feel ready. Two people make up of a group this time, and I am responsible for transcribing. I am too nervous to sit or stand still, even my teacher sees how uneasy I am. After some chatting, we arrive at master Lu’s Silver Star weather station. Teachers park the cars, and we walk to his house when he has already waited in front of it. We greet the master before he takes us to his office. There are many historical data collections and weather instruments inside the office. Teachers talk to master first, and then the captain begins to interview master Lu. After the interview, teachers gift an appreciation certificate to master Lu, and we happily take a group photo together. Master invites Team Pika members to climb up ladders to the roof and to see Silver Star weather station. In the end, we come back to Hemei High School with fruitful results. I am happy our cyber fair topic is Silver Star weather station. It is really special for us to have the opportunity to interview weather observation master Lu Quan-En. After the interview, we all learn a lot of new weather knowledge from him. From his detailed and professional introduction, I learn a lot from some unfamiliar territories. It is a rewarding trip. |
