※Little Weather Angels -- Reflections on the Interview
After reading master Lu Quan-En’s book, watching news report about him, and some introduction from school teachers, we were looking forward to visit master Lu and his weather station. With proper preparation, we arrived at his house according to our appointment and began our first face-to-face interview. We were able to talk with him at close range, listened to his learning process, the history and hardships about building the weather station. It was a important lesson outside of our regular class – either about weather or life. The following are our reflections on Team Pika’s interview of master Lu Quan-En: |

Bing You’s reflections Team Pika has loads of questions, and master is always able to enlighten us instantly and to fix the sudden malfunction in my brain. He does not only answer our questions, but also extends them into many other issues. We learn a lot of new knowledge for the first time in a while. We have further understanding on weather. We can easily handle future weather change all thanks to his quiet devotion to observation and record.
Speaking of master Lu’s extraordinary weather prediction, it feels like he has prophetic ability and knows if weather god has a good mood or not one step earlier. Raining or not causes headache to the general public, but master’s weather report can reduce this problem because it has high accuracy. Although his weather station is private owned, it’s really amazing that he can produce reports as good as Central Weather Bureau all on his own. One other thing about master I have admired:his perseverance on his lifelong obsession. I would never be able to match his determination. To document observation record every day, three times a day, no rest until finished, I definitely cannot do all this laborious tasks and switch goals instantly. Master is very admirable. Finally, I would like to say something to master. We all witness your selfless devotion, thank you. I will never forget your passion for making more people understand the importance of weather. I am very thankful for your dedication to Taiwan. Zheng Yao’s reflections
What I admire master Lu Quan-En the most:His passion for weather. In the beginning as an amateur, he bought books and looked for information all by himself. He also subscribed to weather map from Central Weather Bureau for 50 years. At 16, he spent 3500 dollars to buy instruments for “Silver Star weather station,” and obtained the permit from CWB at 24. Enlightened by master Lu Quan-En, I learn that withered grasses after typhoon are not entirely caused by foehn wind, but by “salty wind.” Prices of vegetables go up and stay high for a long while. Housewives have to spend more than usual. Foehn wind is different from salty wind. In Minnan, foehn wind is called “burning wind” and salty wind is called “salty water smoke.” Weather report on television only mentions temperature, wind power, precipitation and foehn wind. It often ignores “salty wind.” I see many unfamiliar weather instruments at Silver Star weather station. I wonder “what are they used for?” After master Lu’s elaborated explanation, I am gradually familiar with them and learn some new weather knowledge. Besides, we can learn a lot from his never giving up spirit, staying the same from beginning to end, and working tirelessly on his passion. I wish this cyber fair project can let more people see his effort, support and validate him, so he can have the drive to keep going. |
