※Little Weather Angels -- Reflections on the Interview
After reading master Lu Quan-En’s book, watching news report about him, and some introduction from school teachers, we were looking forward to visit master Lu and his weather station. With proper preparation, we arrived at his house according to our appointment and began our first face-to-face interview. We were able to talk with him at close range, listened to his learning process, the history and hardships about building the weather station. It was a important lesson outside of our regular class – either about weather or life. The following are our reflections on Team Pika’s interview of master Lu Quan-En: |

Yan-Min’s reflections
Some of us are responsible for transcribing, and the others are asking questions. Not a moment of break, everyone has his/her own assignment. There are some issues during the interview such as:Classmates who asking questions are not clear expressed enough, classmates who transcribing cannot keep up, recording pen is accidentally out of power, and etc.
We also look at some of master Lu’s weather instruments and old weather books. We also discuss “salty wind” problem with master. Typhoon Soudelor struck Taiwan on August 8, 2015. In addition to record breaking strong winds, there were salty winds along the east coast from Miaoli to Tainan, withering huge amount of crops. It was also the biggest salty wind disaster. Of course we are extremely honored to be able to visit his weather station, but my acrophobia paralyzes my legs. It is not east climbing up. We have to climb two ladders, and then climb out of an exit to the weather station on top of the steel roof. Even Miss Jia-Wen who is very interested in weather has to give up because of leg injury. Although the tiny space upstairs can only accommodate four people each time, it contains every kind of weather instruments. A sparrow is tiny, but is born with completed organ in the body. We also ask master to autograph his book we borrow from library. We are really the biggest fans of the master. After this interview, I think he is very dedicated. He climbs up to weather station so he can observe weather. He also updates weather report on Facebook every day. His tireless, persistent spirit inspires us to learn. Yu-Jun’s reflections
Master Lu Quan-En immediately greets us at the door when we arrive. We conduct our interview in the recording room on the third floor. We begin to chat with master Lu Quan-En about the questions we have decided upon beforehand, such as reflections about weather or knowledge level questions. Master Lu happily answers all these questions with a smile, easing our uneasiness. He talks about many things, but I am most impressed by salty wind. Sometimes there are salty winds after typhoon, rusting metal products, withering crops. It is more serious than we imagined. Miss Jia-Wen who took us on the tour of Hemei weather station also accompanies with us this time. She herself is very interested in weather. When she chats with master, it is like meeting a long lost friend. They cannot stop chatting, but we also incidentally hear more from master. Later, master invites us to visit the station. We have to climb up two ladders because the station is higher up on the roof. Miss Yun-Ni cannot climb up because of acrophobia, so I gladly take over the responsibility of taking pictures. It is a special chance to challenge myself. The space upstairs is not big enough and can only accommodate four people each time, so I decide to go with the first group. After first few classmates climbing up, I look up and see a small platform full of instruments. We stay up there for a while, taking pictures, observing instruments. Even though we are reluctant to leave, we decide it’s time for next group to see. However, we discover that climbing down is more difficult than climbing up. Our captain is not afraid of height, so he climbs up and down so agilely like a monkey. It is really impressive since he also carries an injury. At the end of our visit, we say our goodbye and appreciation to master Lu Quan-En. Team pika takes a satisfied heart on our way home. |
