Project Overview

1. Description of the Local Community

At present, Deaf Women's Basketball Team is training in the Far Eastern Stadium, the gymnasium of Oriental Institute of Technology. It is located at the intersection of South Nan-Ya Road and Far East Road in Pan-chiao District. This is a convenient location for commuting players. Pan-chiao is rich in culture and history. Since earlier times, it has been an important town in the North; the famous Lin Family Mansion and Garden is located here. In recent years, with the joint development of train, high speed railway, and MRT, coupled with constructions of new buildings, Pan-chiao is now a prosperous location with vital functions.

Deaf Women's Basketball Team becomes associated with the Far Eastern Stadium because of the coaches, Pi-cheng Teng and Pi-yun Teng. They were previously coaches for the Oriental Institute of Technology men and women's basketball teams, which also trained at this same location. So naturally this becomes the practice ground for Deaf Women's Basketball Team. Under the training of these two coaches, the team has transformed from a mismatched group to becoming number one in Asia. With everyone’s support, the team can continue to shine internationally, and display Taiwan's vitality to the world.

2. Project Plan Summary

The story of Deaf Women’s Basketball is not only motivational and inspirational, but also provides a comprehensive meaning to life education. To unveil the touching stories behind it, we developed research objectives as follows:

  1. Understand the founding history of Deaf Women's Basketball Team, the significance of the Deaflympics, and develop a deeper appreciation for the efforts behind the process;
  2. Understand the inconvenience of the hearing-impaired, and the development in deaf sports;
  3. Interview people who have supported the team throughout the process, for an in-depth study and understanding of the difficulties and problems that were encountered;
  4. Participate in basketball games, and coordinate activities and projects to introduce and promote their stories on campus;
  5. Through active promotion, we intend to not only share and advocate their spirits to students, but also to help gain support for the team.

Currently, limited information is available on the Web about the Team. To do research for the project, we visited a number of organizations, conducted various interviews, and even watched deaf basketball games in person. These personal experiences helped to expand our understanding and perspective, increase our confidence, and build up our strength. We hope through participation in the CyberFair Project, we can help to share and promote the Team. Accordingly, people who are interested in their motivational stories can find all the information they need easily on our WebPages.

3. Web Environment

  1. Web environment at School: Our school has a computer classroom, equipped with Internet access through fiber-optic network. We mostly conduct our research, discussion, and printouts of related data during lunch break or after-school hours.
  2. Web environment at home: ADSL, Cable, or fiber-optic Internet access.
  3. Data transmitting methods: Through the use of Google Drive, USB, and E-mails, we were able to access and share data in school and at home.
  4. Communication modes: Through the use of social apps and emails on cell phones, iPads and computers.

4. Overcoming the Challenges

1) Playing the role of journalists

Throughout our project, we had numerous opportunities to play the role of journalists. We interviewed people from various fields including government officials, news anchor, sports commentator, sports editors, and even a film director. Prior to the interviews, we felt nervous because the basketball players, Secretary-General (Mr. Yu-ping Chao), and the referee (Mr. Hsin-da Lee) were hearing-impaired persons. We were afraid we could not fully understand their replies. Fortunately, documentary film director Ms. Lin shared with us her experience of working with the deaf basketball players, in addition to guidance from the teachers, our interviews were successful, and contributed greatly to our project.

2) Time management

Every one of us has a club activity that requires a lot of practice, such as band, dance club, or chorus, in addition to our regular academic studies and other talent or after-school classes. To be engaged in the CyberFair Project, which involves significant planning and researching time, time management was essential. We learned to work effectively and utilize spare moments to complete the tasks on hand.

3) Prepare proper interview questions

Asking appropriate questions shows respect for the interviewees. In order to propose meaningful and suitable questions, we need to first gather background information on the interviewee. After serious study and discussions, we were able to come up with good questions that stunned our interviewees and made good impressions.

4) The making of campus news video

A lot of work is required prior to recording the video. We need to first learn how to do the jobs involved, such as director, anchor, teleprompter controller, etc. We encountered some problems in job allocation because some team members wanted the same job. But through communication and rational discussion, we agreed to assign base on whoever is most suited for the job. During the recording process, we came to realize that teamwork is the most important element to successfully complete the task.

5) Promotions in school

We planned various activities in the school to promote Deaf Women Basketball Team, such as taking turns during recess to attract students to see our poster, or go into different classrooms to present our PowerPoint and videos. These activities put our courage and presentation skills to the test. With practice and guidance from the teacher, we were able to present with confidence.

5. Afterthoughts

After learning the story behind Deaf Women’s Basketball Team, we are touched by their dedication and persistence in pursue of their dreams. Even with disability, as long as you are willing to learn and willing to work hard, nothing is impossible. You may not be able to see immediate results, but once the seeds of endeavor sprouted deep within the heart, you can look forward to the day they blossom.

This research project offered us opportunities to explore new experiences. From developing different interview questions and meeting with various experts in their fields, we learned knowledge not found in the textbooks. Tasks such as making a big poster to promote in school, becoming anchors for the broadcast news, presenting in classes, collecting data, and learning how to set up WebPages, were all exciting and useful skills that we acquired from participating in this CyberFair Project.

The involvement in this research project wasn’t easy. We want to give special thanks to those who helped us during the process. We started from not knowing much of what is required of the project to reaching a consensus on doing the best we can to complete the task. This is a valuable learning and growing experience, providing us loads of fond memories to cherish forever!
