Interview Guidelines

How to conduct interview on a person when meeting for the first time? How to produce excellent news reports? We were lucky to have these questions answered because of a precious opportunity. On August 3, 2015, we visited a famous television station in Taiwan, namely TVBS. Since we would be conducting numerous interviews on many relevant people during our research and promotion of "Taiwan Deaf Women's Basketball Team", as well as producing news videos for the students in our school, we hope to learn the procedures of news interviews and production through this visit.

Ms. Kai-wen Chuang, Director of Newscasting Section of TVBS, gave us a news interview and writing class. She taught us to be fully prepared before the interviews, which means to study and digest relevant information before formulating the questions. When preparing the questions, we should consider the logic and not ask something repeatedly. The questions should be asked in a sincere rather than forceful manner to win the interviewees’ trust, so that they would answer the questions truthfully. Prior to the interviews, we should politely ask the interviewees whether we could record or photograph the process. If they do not wish to be recorded, the interviewer must take as many notes as possible. The secret of note-taking is to be "fast, accurate and to the point". With the key words written down, one would be able to accurately derive the main points.

As for documenting the interviews, she cautioned that it must be accurate and well-grounded, without out of context interpretations. In addition, it should be as complete as possible. If the length is limited, it is advisable to select the main points, but still in no way should we distort the original meaning of the interviewees. And if we should have any doubts, the interviewer must find ways to reconfirm these points, instead of making guesses. We applied these principles on the interviews for the research project on Deaf Women’s Basketball Team, which turned out to be very valuable.
