Questionnaires and Survey Analysis

2) Questionnaire Summary and Analysis

  • Survey topic: Taiwan Deaf Women's Basketball Team
  • Respondents: Audiences of the 2015 World Deaf Basketball Championships in Taoyuan.
  • Survey dates: July 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, & 10, 2015

  English version of our questionnaire:

  • Survey objective:
After we decided on the research topic, we found out that 2015 World Deaf Basketball Championships was about to take place in Taoyuan, and Deaf Women's Basketball Team would be participating in the Games. We decided to take advantage of this golden opportunity to survey the audiences in the games, so as to obtain an understanding of those who are interested in deaf basketball tournaments, as well as their familiarity with Deaf Women's Basketball Team. This data will help us collect information about deaf sports in Taiwan, as well as Deaf Women's Basketball Team’s current publicity level.
  • Number of questionnaires collected: Total of 134.
  • Questionnaire design:
In order for respondents to easily fill out the questionnaires, we designed the form with closed-ended multiple choice questions, with some questions allowing more than one answer to obtain more information. Each one of us must prepare a question for the questionnaire, so we brainstormed, discussed, and finally selected the following nine questions to compile into the questionnaire. In addition for research purposes, we also hope to make this task even more meaningful. So we provided the contact information for Deaf Women's Basketball Team at the bottom of the questionnaires. This way, respondents who are interested in supporting the Team can contact them. When we asked the audiences to fill in the questionnaires, we saw that some respondents actually did cut out and kept the contact information of the Team. It makes us very happy to have contributed to Deaf Women's Basketball Team in a small but meaningful way.

• Gender ratio of the respondents

Of the 134 questionnaires collected, 55% of the respondents were female, and 45% male. Typically, basketball tournaments are often dominated by male audience. Our survey showed women's basketball games actually attracted more female viewers. In addition, other questions in our survey also revealed that many respondents came to the ball games because of friends or families. This may also be the reason for more female spectators.

• Age of the respondents

The questionnaire statistics showed that of the 134 respondents, there were 10 people in the age group 12 years and under; 18 People in the age group 13 to 18; 50 people in the age group 19 to 30; and 56 people in the age group 30 years or older. In total, 79% of the respondents were over 19 years old. This showed that the majority of the audiences who came to deaf basketball games were grown-ups.

• Occupation of the respondents

The occupations of the majority of the respondents were office workers and students, these two groups made up approximately 80% of the total. Cross referencing with the age statistics, we can see that the student group was dominated by college students. The dates of the World Deaf Basketball Championships were during summer vacation period, making it easier for students to come and watch. However, of the six days we conducted the surveys, two of which were over the weekend while the other four days were weekdays. But many office workers still commuted after work to watch the game, which demonstrated interest and support for this event.

1. Are you a basketball fan?   Yes  No

79% of the respondents in our research study were basketball enthusiasts, while 21% were not. Usually people who go to the games also love the sport, so we wondered what were the reasons for the 21% not basketball fans to come. After examining our questionnaire statistics, we found majority of the respondents came to watch the games because they wanted to root for Taiwan. These people may not necessarily like basketball, but simply wanted to cheer for our national athletes. Moreover, many respondents indicated they came because they wanted to show support for the hearing-impaired athletes; these people may not be basketball fans either.

2. How did you learn about the 2015 World Deaf Basketball Championships?
      □Internet  Advertising  Friends/Family  Long-term follower

According to our survey, 65% of the respondents learned about the Game because of family and friends. Therefore, a lot of spectators at the games were family members or friends of the deaf athletes. Only a quarter (25%) of the respondents came because of advertising or Internet. This indicated the promotion for deaf sports events can be improved. The hearing-impaired athletes are not receiving as much attention from the general public as they could. Our government and related authorities should enhance or modify the way they advocate the events, to attract more audiences to come.

3. Why did you come to the game today?
□Love basketball  Support Ling Yang Team  Root for Taiwan  Support the hearing-impaired
□Invited by friends  Support the other teams (________________)

The main reasons for respondents to come to the games were: "Root for Taiwan" 31%; "Support the hearing-impaired" 23%; "Love basketball" 22%; “Support Ling Yang Team" 15%. Only 35 people out of 134 respondents chose "Support Ling Yang Team". This indicated that Ling Yang Team’s visibility should be further promoted through marketing and publicity efforts to gain more support from the public.

From previous questions in the questionnaire, we learned that a lot of the spectators came because of family and friends. These people understand the efforts and sacrifice the deaf players have made in order to participate in these international sports events. However, there were 25% of the respondents who came because of Internet and advertising, and many of those people also chose "Very touched", which serves to show the spirit of Deaf Women's Basketball Team is truly admirable.

Yes, and purchased  Yes, but did not buy   □No, but would like to buy  No, and don’t plan to buy

As can be seen from the survey statistics, 57% of the respondents knew about the book "Rookies, Fly Faster", while 43% did not know about the book. This data showed that this book holds a certain degree of publicity in the deaf community. "Yes, but did not buy" accounted for 46%, and "Yes, and also purchased" accounted for 11%, which meant of the 76 respondents who knew about this book, only 15 people actually bought the book. However, our survey also showed that of the 43% who did not know about the book, more than half of them would like to buy. This is an exciting finding. If Deaf Women's Basketball Team can increase its publicity efforts to get more people to know about this book, sales volume can be increased.

6. Did you know Deaf Women's Basketball Team has officially established
"Taiwan Deaf Women's Sports and Recreation Association"?   Yes  No

Of the 134 respondents, 83 people knew that Deaf Women's Basketball Team has officially established "Taiwan Deaf Women's Sports and Recreation Association", which accounted for 62% of the total. 51 people did not know, accounted for 38% of the total. This Association was established primarily for the purpose of uniting the power of hearing-impaired female athletes, and to raise funds for sports such as beach volleyball and women's basketball. So the higher the visibility of the Association, the greater help it is to Deaf Women's Basketball Team.

7. What do you think is the best way to promote Deaf Women's Basketball Team?
Set up website  Participate in media programs  Host friendly competitions  Others________________

From the pie chart, we can see that most people felt whether participation in the media program, set up website, or host friendly competitions were all good ways to promote Deaf Women's Basketball. Particularly "Participate in media programs" accounted for the highest at 34%, while "Setup website" accounted for 31%. This shows that after we complete our Cyberfair project, it can be used effectively to assist in the promotion of Deaf Women's Basketball, which makes our project even more meaningful. Respondents also made other recommendations, for example, corporate sponsorship, advertisements, and promotions in social media such as Facebook, which are good suggestions for Deaf Women's Basketball Team to consider.

8. Do you think playing basketball requires hearing?   Yes  No

Our survey statistics showed that only 20% of the respondents felt basketball requires hearing ability, while 80% said "No". The respondents who felt hearing is not required are four times more than that of those who thought it does. This showed that most respondents who came to the stadium to watch the ball games accept and support deaf basketball, which is good encouragement for Deaf Women's Basketball Team.

9. Do you think there are adequate resources and support for deaf sports in Taiwan?
  Yes  No

In contrast, those who felt it’s not enough tallied as high as 89%, that is nearly 90%. This indicated the respondents at the ball games felt that deaf athletes should be given more resources and support, which can be provided to deaf sports associations and related governing authorities for consideration.

Survey Conclusion:
Our survey result indicates there is room for improvement for Deaf Women's Basketball Team’s publicity efforts. Most the respondents learned about Deaf Basketball Championships through family or friends, only one-fourth came as a result of advertising or Internet, which revealed the promotional effort for deaf sports event can be enhanced. And most of the respondents came to the games to root for Taiwan or for deaf athletes. Only 15% of the respondents came to support the Ling Yang Team. This shows Ling Yang Team should strengthen the team's visibility. Our research also shows that most people felt resource for deaf sports is not enough in Taiwan. Hopefully through our research project, it will allow more people to know about the story of Deaf Women's Basketball, to learn about the book "Rookies, Fly Faster", and consequently support Deaf Women's Basketball Team and benefit from their inspiring spirit of perseverance and determination.
