Interview Q&A |
|
Teacher Huang is a great storyteller. During the five-hour visit, he showed his logical thinking and great eloquence which made us learn a great deal from him. The following are some of the impressive parts from the interview.
Q:In what ways do you get the inspiration?
A: Inspiration comes in every corner of life. Let’s say if I want to make a colored carp-shaped kite, I will study it, figuring out what is Shiaowa tricolor, mountains and rivers fission, streams in autumn. That’s why I say the dream is the motivation of learning. It is your thoughts rather than the techniques that changes the world. You can see the nice lanterns that are made by many senior experts, they are masters making lanterns, but they cannot be like me living in a modern way, a wealthy life, because they live in a world which put the craft the first priority. In our history, it is the thoughts that lead the craft, not the craft leads our thoughts.
Q:In a kite making contest, the golden dragon kite that you spent three months on it was thought by the judges to be an unfinished work because the frame of the kite was not covered with paper. What do you think about this matter?
A:I won the second prize in that competition. The judges had no idea what I was doing. That’s why they didn’t identify with my work. The most important thing for me is to stick to my own idea regardless of how other people are going to view my work. When people disagree with you, it might be their ignorance, not knowing the concept you want to present. This is such an old fashion thought; no wonder the foreigners are credited with in invention of aircraft.
Q:How do you capture the most beautiful image of the flying kites?
A:When a kite is done, I usually think where to fly it to capture the most perfect image. There is once, I carried the giant flying-horse kite climbing the liuhuangkeng in Yangmingshan National Park where are renowned for natural terrestrial heat landscape. I used the camera to capture a scene that happened in Greek mythology, a flying horse mounts the clouds and rides the mist.
Q:What touches you the most when you are flying the kites ?
A:There is no regulation for when is better for people to fly kites. For me, as long as the kite is done, as long as there is wind, no matter it is 3 a.m. or 12 in the middle of the day, I will go fly the kite. So, I often fly the kite at 2 or 3 o’clock in the midnight on the rooftop. One day, it was during the winter when the cold current coming, I flew the kite on the rooftop, feeling that I was the only person that is awake in this world. Just the very moment I am thinking about this, suddenly there was a night heron flying and calling over my head, and it dawned on me that it is not unique but has its counterpart, it won’t come down to the worst situation that you alone is the only awake person in this world. No matter how lonely you feel, you have to believe that there must be someone out there leads the same life as you do, so you should avoid being conceited.
Q:Have you ever considered flying kites at the highest mountain in Taiwan?
A:Yes I did, but I failed in the halfway. Many years ago, there was a “New Idea” magazine, specializing in campaigning for Mt. Morrison protection. They asked me:’Have you ever thought about flying kites in Mt. Morrison? ‘ I said: ’Sure, I have! And you can have a simple title called “ To Make Mt. Morrison Grow Taller’!” But I continued: ‘I will do it only if I can take the helicopter, I can’t bear climbing up that high ’ Then he responded me: ‘We can only get you to the half way of the hill, it will take too many hours going up to the top.’ I answered: ‘Oh, I still have to think about it.’ So, I ever wanted to do it, and I almost did it.
Q:What is the thing you want to do the most ?
A:Many years ago, when China and Taiwan were about to open its own gate, there is one lesson in the English textbook for the 9th graders introducing my “ peace dove kite” . The kite is one kilometer in length which is also the work that I won the first place in an international contest held in Holland. At that time, what I was trying to do is to “cross the border”, to cross the nation border! I want to fly the kite from Keenmen to Shiamen, don’t you think it is interesting? It is fairly difficult to fly the kite from Keenmen to Shiamen, because I have to fly the kite horizontally, avoid it from flying higher, or it will never cross the border. We can put the GPS at the end of the kite, in that way we will tell whether the end of the kite has crossed the border or not.
Q:If it all started again, will you still choose to fly kites?
A:Absolutely, because I feel so happy doing what I am doing. If anyone wants me to instruct him/her, I am perfectly sure I can teach my students well. There are only two qualifications for being my students, one is to have high EQ and the other is to be wealthy. If you plan to make a living by making kites, you are going to suffer. Even I haven’t thought about survive by making kites.
Q:What is your motto?
A:There was once I on a TV interview, the host asked me:” Mr. Huang, what would be your motto if one day you are dead?” I said:” A kite will be taken as garbage if it can not fly.” The reason I said so is because in my life I have seen many obistinate people who refuse to admit their failure. It is obvious that your kite won’t fly, but when being asked, you still claim that it can fly, you are merely boasting, you can’t accept the fact that you have failed.
