Notes of Kite Artist:The Objective
Our school, the Xinsheng Elementary School, is right across the street of the Da-an Forest Park. We often play in the park after school. One day, we saw someone flying a kite: a kid trying to send a large kite into the sky with the help of his parents. Although they failed many times, they were happy running and laughing. The sight was very amusing.
In one of our social classes in the second semester of the fourth grade, the teacher told us that in the old times, people flew kites on the ninth day of September every year to commemorate their deceased family members. We were thinking: What were kites like then? How many different shapes can kites have? Who are making kites in Taiwan? How can we make a kite fly? A series of questions became a desire to dig deeper into the subject. After a few enthusiastic sessions of discussion, our interests and curiosity in kites made us decide to pick it as the subject of our research project.
With the help of the internet, we found that there is an internationally famous kitemaker in Taiwan – Mr. Buteo Huang. He has won many first prizes at international awards. The kites he designed astonished us. In order to meet him in person and to see his works, we got the nerve up to dial his number. Out of expectation, he accepted our invitation immediately. Therefore, we, the Skydreamer team of the Xinsheng Elementary School, started an exciting journey in the Kite World.
