A painter creates art on a canvas, while Buteo Huang creates in the sky. Three simple elements – a piece of cotton paper, a bamboo stick, and a roll of thread – can transform into a vivid artwork of kite. Mr. Huang once described that creating is just like “God creates the world” – seeing the kites shape up from scratch before your eyes and soar into the sky, that feels amazing.
Inspirations can be found all around us – be it in the air, on the ground, or under water, and they are great sources for the art. But Mr. Huang always does research diligently before he starts the creating process. For example, if he chose to make a carp-shaped kite, he would study the shapes and skins of the carp, and do field observation. Mr. Huang always stresses that “Dreams motivate learning.” To send a kite high up into the sky, one should keep updating his knowledge in the related fields.
To Mr. Huang, the greatest obstacle on his career path has been the discouragement from his friends and families. They all thought that kites are just for kids, not a hobby worth pursuing. But such prejudice ignited Mr. Huang’s determination to dig even deeper into the kite world. He thought that the more expertise he attains, the better chance he succeeds. No wonder his story is included in the English text book for the ninth grade as an inspiration.

When foreign visitors see Mr. Huang’s kites flying in the sky, they often gasp and say, “Unbelievable!” “Amazing!” That kind of recognition is what drives him to work even harder to improve and to realize his boundless ideas.
Thought and techniques
Summary of the films /
Buteo Huang believes in ‘it is thought not techniques that changes the world.’ Though comes before changes and creations. Then following techniques thus can put thought into practice. It is a pity that traditional technicians focus on reproducing crafts rather than creating works, which results in formalism in crafts and prevents the progress of living standards. If we could transcend traditional ideas and come up with new thinking models, the value of kite education and collections should be promoted beyond folkgame.
