Buteo Huang started his journey in kitemaking from the third grade when he made his first kite. He set out to make a diamond-shaped kite better than those by his elder brothers. He used thicker calendar paper instead of regular ones for its durability and tried to innovate rather than just copy. To save the time rolling the line, he pulled off the blade from a fan to make a customized reel.
Growing up, when he was going to make a bird-shaped kite, he collected information about birds, studied bird’s figures and the biology, and did field observation. He gained such extensive knowledge that could have made him an ornithologist. For the kite to take off smoothly, he researched on the theory of flight; for it to be sturdier, he kept up with the latest technologies worldwide.
His strengths come partly from his talent, and partly from his self-discipline. In addition, the training in architectural design during his undergraduate years also inspired him – the theory of design and the best practice of realizing it benefit his kitemaking process greatly.
Finally, Mr. Huang assured us: “Moderate pressure is good for children.” He meant that during our learning process through life, we should be able take criticism from others, reflect on our deeds, and believe in ourselves. That is how we can break the limits.
