Stoies of Kite Artist:The Work
It’s Buteo Huang’s work to make, fly and exhibit kites. Whenever he finishes his work, he would do a flight test. A true kite should be able to fly.
When it comes to flying kites, the weather is the biggest challenge. The climate in Taiwan is of a tropical island type. The pros: the wind blows all year round; the cons: the strength of the wind is unpredictable. Being an experienced kite flyer, Mr. Huang is always well prepared. As for the unpredictables, he would leave it to God.
Exhibition is an important part of Mr. Huang’s work. Although each kite is beautiful individually, putting them together without a theme would mean little. But if organized by certain features, the kites would become expressional and storytelling, and the process of which is educational. That is what Mr. Huang wants to achieve with his exhibitions ultimately.
Very few people can match a hobby with a job successfully. Mr. Huang is among the lucky ones. According to him, the kite art is not a fine art. By definition, a kite needs to fly. It is a functional art that combines old craftsmanship, contemporary aesthetics, and dynamics. For Mr. Huang, to be able to utilize the knowledge in different areas is fun.
No wonder he once said that if he could choose again, he would do the same.
