【Connections through Kites】Cross-cultural Learning
Teachers contacted Sanzan Elementary School in Hualien County in order to disseminate our research results. Sanzan Elementary School is a Truku indigenous school with about one hundred students in total, and only one class for each grade. The school is surrounded by rivers and mountains, all of which consist of a beautiful scene. How enviable that they could enjoy learning in Nature every day! Teacher Huang strongly supported our cross-cultural exchange project when we mentioned it and immediately offered fifteen kites and his books and compact disks for the project. We sent these precious materials along with our research results to the fifth grade teacher Mei-Hui Lin in Senzen Elementary School. Teacher Lin integrated Buteo Huang’s stories into curriculum, accordingly designed the worksheets, and taught and led students to fly kites on the sports field. We were so happy to see students diligent study attitude and the joyful look of flying kites on the sports field when the leading teacher showed video clips and worksheets sent by teacher Lin. Two groups of strangers located on campuses of northern and eastern Taiwan came to know each other and built emotional connections through kites. This was amazing, and we also experienced the joyfulness of sharing knowledge with people.
Many schoolmates at Senzen Elementary School like nautilus and Dawu traditional vessel kites, and think these two pieces are spectacular and beautiful. They learned the invincible spirit from teacher Huang and are firmly convinced that we should strive for our dreams, they said. They also mentioned in worksheets that how enviable it is when they see Dawu traditional vessel kites are flying into the sky. They hope teacher Huang could also make Truku traditional culture of facial tattooing fly into the sky. Furthermore, they hoped teacher Huang could visit Senzen Elementary School to teach them how to make kites. The leader of our team, Ting-Han Lin, conveyed the wishes of Senzen schoolmates via email. Teacher Huang was kind enough and said that he will consider if time permits. Through our project on kites, it connects Xin Sheng Elementary School in Taipei and Senzen Elementary School in Hualien, and Han and indigenous cultures. Moreover, it links up our dreams and hopes.
