Introduction: we・re honored to have localelderly Mr. Kun-chung Hsu and the former President of PTA, Mr. Lian-shu Hsu with us and talk in depth about the founding and establishment of BCC Fengyuan Station and the operation. First, we・ll interview Mr. Kun-chung Hsu. Below is the transcript:

Q: When was Fengyuan Station built?

A: I think it was in 1958, when 3 people came to me to inquire about buying a piece of land and I asked them what for? They told me to that they wanted to build a chicken farm. They were going to purchase the land from Mr. Gan Hsu. But his land wasn・t large enough for them, and therefore the land next to Wun De Elementary School belonging to Mr. Shu-ting Hsu was offered, the trade was completed. Later, the entire land was plowed and flattened, and it took a long time to finish. It began operation in 1975 with one tower. After many trials of sending and receiving waves, it finally became operational.

Q: What was the influence Fengyuan Station, the central relay station had on the local residents?

A: there was interference listening to other radio stations and the TV screens became fuzzy. So BCC made steel shelves and gave them to the families affected by the waves to improve the screen. At the time, the TV inside the kitchen of Wun De Elementary School, and they got a steel shelf. After continual improvement on the part of BCC, we get normal reception now. It used to be that the remote for a car would fail and you cannot lock, and that・s been improved. If the microphone is opened, one will hear the broadcast of BCC or some noises, which was quite bothersome in the past.

Q: How was the interaction between the locals and Fengyuan Station?

A: BCC presented gifts for the graduation, and then later, theFairy Garden was presented to Wun De Elementary School by BCC. We all know that.

Thank you, Mr. Kun-chung Hsu for the precious information, and thank you for taking our interview.

Next, we・re interviewing the former President of PTA, Mr. Lian-shu Hsu.

Q: There were many interesting things while constructing Fengyuan Station, could you talk about them?

A: I was attending the Wun De Elementary School, and we rarely saw huge buildings back then. So when we saw materials sent to school, and when the tower was being built, we became curious and when to see it. The foundation was about 6 meter wide and 3 meters deep. Some of the naughty students jumped into the holes. When the tower was almost completed, some students climbed up and they said that they could see the Town ofYuanlin! There was a female student who couldn・t get off and she ended up crying!

Q: Wun De Elementary School gives out scholarship every semester, how did that come about?

A: As early as in the days when Mr. Chian-bin Hsu was the president of PTA, $100,000 NTD was donated toBao Sheng Temple and the interest was given to Wun De Elementary School as scholarship. Later, BCC participated in the program and every year, it gave $30,000 NTD to school and the top three students in each class received scholarship.

Q: Does BCC give back to the community?

A: In the beginning BCC gave money to the community, later it felt that it was more meaningful giving the scholarship to students and so it only provided scholarship to the school. It・s been doing that for over 10 years!

Former Director Yu as well as current Director Chen of Hakka Network came to visit Wun De Elementary School and from there we knew that interacted with the community very well.

Thank you, Mr. Hsu, for taking our interview even though you・re quite busy. Thank you for helping us to learn about the history of Fengyuan Station and helping WunDe Broadcasting Explore Team to understand the importance of interaction between local industry and the community.

PrincipalChang: Today is the deadline of Cyberfair application. You children worked very hard but you have learned a lot about things like writing article about the visit, writing interviews, making a report for the programs, drawing and so on. Now, it is with great honor we welcome Mr. Hsu, who will be encouraging everyone!

Mr. Hsu: Good job everyone. Are you tired? (Student A: we・re fine! ) But not photos, because she comes to work without make up.

Q: What influence did the broadcasting station have on living?

A: We weren・t really affected during our time. When I was in school, BCC was surrounded with steel wire nets, and we used to climb over to pick starfruit and guava. There were even pineapples next to the net.

Back then, it was hard to receive signals from CTV because of the interference. Because the lease was up, CTV relay station moved away. Now we have digital TV and there isn・t any interference. All 12 channels present great programs!

That・s it for the interview, thank you, Mr. Hsu!
