I learned from my visit to BCC: 1) to be a great radio show host (especially
the anchor for news broadcast), one must prepare tongue twisters to train for
maintaining smoothness and accurate enunciation while speaking fast; 2) must
speak each word very clearly to avoid confusing the listeners and becoming
embarrassed; 3) radio program host must prepare for the target audience and
know the topic and program content that the audience prefers; 4) the
“dishes” refer to the knowledge that the host has and the music that the
host prepares; 5) to host a program welcomed by many, the host must
continually learning new knowledge; 6) to be a good host, one must be passionate
about people, events and things in his or her environment to avoid being
stuck in solitude in the recording room. To be a good program host, one
must have possess the attitude & qualification above, in addition to
being willing to learn before becoming a perfect radio program host. Ps: waves
were discovered by Hertz.

Today we visited BCC and
interviewed Director Chen. Before our interview, Director Chen gave
everyone a lesson in broadcasting. During the class, he mentioned that the
relay station must be placed at a high ground in order for the signal to
travel far. Although the signal will pass through obstacles, but its
strength will become weaker.
Next, he presented another lesson, which was about being a host. The most
important thing being a host is “good enunciation”. During the training
process, the host-to-be must practice tongue twisters because that helps
the host-candidate to speak smoothly and fluently. After the lesson, we
were invited into the recording room. I was a little scared upon entering
and I was still a little bit nervous after some classmates finished reading
their scripts. When it was my turn, I discovered that it was nothing to be
afraid of; the process involved talking to a microphone and equipment. It
was all right even if the reader wasn’t fluent; all they had to do is make
a few cuts and pastes to reach near perfection. The equipment in the
recording room was quite amazing. It really didn’t matter much how bad one
read his or her scripts, the equipment took care of all the issues and the
end result was completely different then what one imaged. It was simply
remarkable.
Then we visited the director of the station, Mr. Chen, who took much care answering
our questions and helped everyone to gain much knowledge of BCC and
broadcasting.

Hsu answered the question correctly and got the prize.

Host Jie-mei Long of Taichung
Station told us that are many necessary conditions to be a host, some
examples are listed below:
1) Must be sensitive to the target audience.
2) Different music is played because old people and young people have
different tastes.
3) The old broadcasting was more text-book oriented but today’s programming
is more diverse.
4) Anyone can be a host for radio programming; one isn’t required to be a
graduate of broadcasting major and as long as he or she speaks clearly with
enough professional knowledge, he or she can be broadcasting personnel.
5) Different age level likes different broadcasts.
6) Radio program host are like chefs and different music plus knowledge is
like their “dish”.
7) To host a popular program, the host must continually learn and be fully
prepared before hand.
8) Radio program host (especially news casters) often trains with tongue
twisters in order to be able to speak fast with great enunciation.
9) A host for reporting Taiwanese dialect must sound folksy.
10) As long as one is diligent in practicing the techniques for
broadcasting, one can become a popular program host.
The above 10 examples really inspired me and I want to be a host for radio
programming. There was this Director Chen, who told us much information
concerning waves, such as it was discovered in 1873 and the unit of waves was
[HZ](Hertz); the reason the unit was called Hertz was because there was a
scientist in US named Hertz. He was the discoverer of radio waves and thus
the unit was named after him.
