In 1987, the marshal law status of Taiwan was abolished; in 1988, the ban on freedom to print independent newspaper was terminated, In 1993, the restrictions on cable TV stations and other TV stations were rescinded, and from that point on, the competition of media became red hot. During the last 15 years, the government opened registration ten times for new radio stations and the number of broadcasting companies and stations expanded from 13 and 188 respectively, to almost 200 stations nationwide. In comparison to TV, which requires stable power source and space, and to newspaper, which requires sources of distribution, radio broadcasting has very few limits. The penetration ability of radio waves is less affected by terrain than TV waves. In addition, radio waves are not restricted by the available number of issues for text medium like newsprints. The fundamental ability of radio broadcasting still unmatched by other media.

In recent years, the internet has brought about the digital integration of all traditional broadcasting technology and it has made the human civilization more diverse, having more speed and more convenience. The digital internet radio stations redefined the traditional stations, which were limited by hearing. Not only these stations are able to offer listening and viewing programs, but they are no longer restricted by regional/national boundaries and their programs can be heard at any corner of the global. Moreover, they offer more diverse services. Therefore, in addition of business opportunities brought about by programs, internet radio stations are able to utilize the limitless resource of the net and reach out far beyond what¡¦s possible traditionally.

In summary. BCC is facing great challenges in legal aspect, policy aspect, market demands and technological development. The most important issue is to combine past advantages and integrate with today¡¦s possibilities, and in turn, reach the highest heights possible.
