Calligraphy Learning

1. Calligraphy Learning

After our in-depth study on the importance of calligrapghy, and there links within Cloud Gate Dance Theatre in the past months. We have learned the origin of Cloud Gate and a Cursive: A Trilogy is the most well-known work with the elements of calligraphy. Mr. Lin Hwai-min said, "Calligraphy is dance and the strokes and rhythm of calligraphy are transformed into physical movements. Dancers present the characters on stage with the physical rhythm". The Cloud Gate dancers imitate the spirit and force of calligraphy by physical movements to show lovely rhythm and beautiful postures.

We were inspired to practice calligraphy. Thus, we decided to visit a professional calligraphy teacher Ms. Liang Ting-chien in our school. First, we introduced our ideas to combine the project research with calligraphy. We appreciated Ms. Liang who provided the place and instructions for us. Thus, we could review and practice the art of calligraphy. After brainstorming, we decided to apply the cursive style to introduce the sophisticated combination between traditional calligraphy and modern dance.

Ms. Liang Ting-chien gave us the copybooks she prepared in advance and everyone picked the Chinese writing brushes to practice on a piece of rice paper. We all thought the strokes were easy, however, the techniques were difficult! With the teacher's detailed instruction and our constant practice, we became familiar with the keys and it was interesting to show free and aesthetic strokes. With teamwork, we accomplished the cursive style Chang Hsu's and that was a beautiful ending for us.

2. Afterthoughts on the Calligraphy Learning

Wan-fang's Afterthoughts on Calligraphy Learning

4-5-2-01 Practicing calligraphy is a relaxing activity. Before this practice, I have learned the techniques of calligraphy already. However, the difference was that I normally practiced with small brushes and the characters were limited in the nine-squared grid. This time, without the nine-squared grid, it was an empty paper for us to practice. The large brushes were powerful. I wrote slowly and experience the elegance of calligraphy. Through the strokes, we imagined the Cloud Gate dancers moved elegantly as these characters manifested the beauty of calligraphy.

After following the steps of teacher, we finally created a satisfying work. We wrote our characters on a large piece of white paper and even splatter the ink on the paper with the brushes. We had fun writing calligraphy and found the way to calm ourselves. In the process of splattering the ink, we released our stress.

Yen-chen's Afterthoughts on Calligraphy Learning

4-5-2-02 In this experience of practicing calligraphy, Ms. Liang Ting-chien allowed us to select the words and I chose the cursive style of "Kuang". We were not good at calligraphy. Thus, Ms. Liang selected more unique characters and styles for us. The strokes of calligraphy are sophisticated. The teacher was creative and we practiced the characters on a large piece of paper. Finally, we splattered the ink on the paper with artistic dots. It was fun and we made the work more creative!

Finally, Ms. Liang Ting-chien wrote the characters of "Cloud Gate Dance Theatre" and she was calm and elegant, which was totally different from us. We must have patience when practicing calligraphy. The practice should not be done in a rush. However, we could not write too slowly, because our hands will tremble and ink is hard to control. The dance of Cloud Gate required inner peace and cultivation as the techniques of calligraphy!

Ching-pei's Afterthoughts on Calligraphy Learning

4-5-2-03 Although it was not my first time to practice calligraphy, but after a long period of time, I became unfamiliar with it. As expected, the first try was not good and I even failed to finish the outline of the character. However, with the teacher's instruction, I immediately made progress. I wrote the character "Xing" and I attempted to write it freely. After several practices, I finally wrote a decent character.

After this experience, I realized that calligraphy, and dance or any other kinds of art performances are not easy. However, if we do our best, our efforts will show results. Finally, the teacher encouraged us to write our words on a paper to accomplish our work of art. I hope that we will be united like this work and accomplish our final web page successfully. I deeply show gratitude to the teacher.

Chun-hsien's Afterthoughts on Calligraphy Learning

4-5-2-04Today we were in the calligraphy classroom and I thought of the characters "retrospect (Hui Ku)"! I had written these two characters before which were praised by my teacher. Besides calligraphy, the teacher allowed us to use the splattering technique which we were not allowed to do in the elementary school since it might stain a classmates' clothes. This time, in order to write aesthetic characters, she exceptionally allowed us to use this technique. When I threw the brush, I used too much force and my hands were filled with ink. I had to spend lots of time washing it off.

Calligraphy is, "the voice without sound and image without form". When practicing calligraphy, we should not only be concentrated, but also pay attention to the force of holding the brushes. After several round of practices, we became familiar with the characters. It reminded me of what I saw on TV and the calligraphy teacher said, "it does not matter if we write the words correctly. The key is to write them happily". In fact, practicing calligraphy can not only enhance concentration, but also strengthen patience. I should practice more in my spare time.

Cai-ru's Afterthoughts on the Calligraphy Learning

4-5-2-05 In the calligraphy classroom, I attempted to recall what I have learned about calligraphy. I was worried that I became unfamiliar with the practice, I was excited to see the teacher's characters "Cloud Gate Dance Theatre" in the room. In addition, the teacher taught us that we could practice cursive style instead of regular script and it would show the flow of each character. It was a relief, I was not good at regular script since childhood! I was surprised with my force, I accomplished the character "cloud" with one stroke. Finally, with teamwork, the teacher encouraged us to write the characters individually to accomplish the final work.

Calligraphy is a Chinese traditional culture and art, which is part of the Chinese lives. By this project research of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, I recognized the talent of Mr. Lin Hwai-min who choreographed the work of Cloud Gate Theater with calligraphy as the background. When Cloud Gate dancers presented the beauty of calligraphy via the fluent physical movements, their bodies were as perfect as the strokes in calligraphy. They not only showed visual aesthetics, but also revealed cultural and dance art characteristics.

Ling-yin's Afterthoughts on Calligraphy Learning

4-5-2-06 Calligraphy is an important part of the Chinese culture. Thus, I was excited to experience calligraphy this time. It was Ms. Liang Ting-chien from school who taught us calligraphy. She demonstrated several common characters in Cloud Gate such as "Cursive", "Wild Cursive", "Yong" and the most important "Cloud Gate". I was unfamiliar with calligraphy and I was worried. Thus, I chose a relatively simple word, Cursive.

I practiced several times and I still could not make it. The style of Cursive was bolder and I followed the teacher's example. Everyone wrote the characters on a large rice paper and at the same time we got ink on our faces. The experience was impressive and unforgettable.

Crystal 's Afterthoughts on Calligraphy Learning

Calligraphy is a Chinese essence since the ancient times. It is not only a kind of communication, but also an attractive art of writing. People who do not understand Chinese can still appreciate this traditional culture. Calligraphy is extremely important for Cloud Gate Dance Theatre which tends to combine eastern elements in dance. For instance, Cursive and Water Stains on the Wall are associated with calligraphy. In order to perfectly present the dance, Mr. Lin Hwai-min asked the dancers to learn calligraphy in order to sense this profound feeling.

In this course of calligraphy, although we did not write difficult characters, it was still challenging for me. It was four years ago when I practiced calligraphy. Besides, I couldn't even write the words properly with pens, not to mention with brushes. I spent plenty of time practicing only the word "door". I am glad to have the opportunity to experience the art of Chinese characters!

Ai-lin's Afterthoughts on Calligraphy Learning

4-5-2-08 It was interesting to experience calligraphy. I have learned calligraphy when I was in elementary school. However, at the time, I did not have any special feeling. I tried calligraphy again to find how Cloud Gate introduced calligraphy in their dance. Before performing the series of Cursive, in order to completely experience the movement, structure, strokes and state of mind, Cloud Gate dancers practiced calligraphy for a period of time to incorporate it into their physical performance. The combination between the hard shaft and soft brush could be the essence obtained by Cloud Gate dancers!

This time, the calligraphy teacher asked me to stand when practing calligraphy. Thus, in the process, my body could move at the same time, and this became the art performance of the whole body. Likewise, in dance my body moved with the limbs. In this experience, I wrote the character "Yong". The horizontal and the perfect last strokes resembled the dancers' beautiful ending of the dance. The dance was connected with calligraphy of Chinese culture. We could feel the power of history and move forward with this steady force!

Pin-tung's Afterthoughts on Calligraphy Learning

4-5-2-09 After school, everyone with their schoolbags left the classroom immediately towards calligraphy classroom. I had stopped practicing calligraphy since elementary school. I was a bit worried about the practice. I was so nervous I got lost at first but finally I followed my classmates and enter the classroom on time.

After the teacher's introductions, I stopped thinking about non-sensical matters in order to stay focused, on writing "Cloud Gate Dance Theatre" in the short time. I was responsible for "Cursive" in the well-known Wild Cursive by Cloud Gate. It seemed to be easy, but I was always unsatisfied with my writing. The teacher told us to write the characters calmly. I realized that calligraphy and dance are the same and we should enjoy them and stay calm!

Yung-chieh's Afterthoughts on Calligraphy Learning

4-5-2-10 After graduating from elementary school, I rarely practice calligraphy. Since this project was associated with calligraphy, we discussed our experiences with the teacher Ms. Liang Ting-chien. Upon arriving in the classroom I was excited and nervous. I saw the example of "Cloud Gate Dance Theatre" written by Ms. Liang and it reminded me of what Mr. Lin Hwai-min once said, "calligraphy and dance are the same origin in different forms and they both rely on breathing."

I was responsible for the character "earth (Di)". It seemed to be an easy word. I learned various techniques for it. However, my writing was poor and after several rounds of practice, I made a tremendous progress and obtained a sense of achievement. After the practice, we wrote our chosen characters on a large piece of paper. I hesitated but finally I accomplished. It was a big relief to throw the brush in the end. Some classmates even had ink on their bodies! Ms. Liang Ting-chien wrote the characters of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre for us to perfectly finish this activity.
