Mr. Tao Yeh is a choreographer born in Sichuan, China. His creative style was unique and he created "Tao's Circular Movement System" highly acknowledged by the world. Mr. Tao Yeh designed many pieces related to numbers which echoed the number of the dancers involved. Physical movements are limitless with no fixed point, the body comes and goes with no ends. At first, the goal of Mr. Tao Yeh was to have the performance of his dance troupe in large international festivals. However, it was extremely difficult at that time in China. There was not any Chinese modern dance troupes, well-known to the world. Fortunately, in a few years with the efforts of Mr. Tao, the TAO Dance Theater was invited to the Lincoln Center Festival of New York and Dance Festival of Sydney Opera House. They became the first renowned Chinese modern dance troupe overseas.

The performance of TAO Dance Theater is based on 3 different choreographers and 3 different works. It includs 12 choreographed by Mr. Tao Yeh for Cloud Gate dancers, Multiplication choreographed by Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung for TAO Dance dancers and Autumn River choreographed by Mr. Lin Hwai-min for the senior dancers of Cloud Gate. Mr. Tao Yeh named the work 12, since he worked with 12 Cloud Gate dancers and his inspiration was the rapid flowing clouds seen in the mountains of Sweden. Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung aimed to combine the techniques of TAO Dance Theater with his dance and physical skills. Thus, the work was named Multiplication. Mr. Lin Hwai-min saw a tranquil river in Kyoto and associated with autumn river and also his white hair, thus he called the work Autumn River.

Lin Hwai-min felt sorry the talents of Mr. Tao Yeh was not well recognized by the Chinese audiences. Thus, Mr. Lin assisted with the exchange and collaboration among Tao Yeh, Cheng Tsung-lung and two dance troupes. Along with Lin's last work Autumn River, the final program was planned by Cloud Gate before the retirement of Lin Hwai-min! Mr. Tao Yeh choreographed the piece 12 for the Cloud Gate dancers, he expected the dancers to move nonstop and dance to the waves and disperse in the same direction as the clouds. Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung choreographed Multiplication as the structure of architecture, along with the famous spinning and physical flexibility of TAO dancers. The 3 works, dazzling Multiplication, simple 12 and aesthetic Autumn River allowed us to appreciate excellent collaboration of choreographers from different generations of Taiwan and China!

2. Afterthoughts on Theater Experience

Ai-lin's Afterthoughts on the Theater Experience

4-4-2-01 The performance was accomplished by 2 dance troupes and 3 choreographers. The first two sections were fulfilled by young dancers. In the process of the performance, we perceived the powerful physical presentation of them. In Multiplication performed by TAO Dance Theater of the first section, it started from a quiet opening to a more severe twist. I was impressed with the changeable lighting effect. In 12 of the second section, there was only one dancer on the stage. The dancers took turns to perform on stage. Dancers showed the movements on the ground and made consistent opening poses. Different dance troupes and excellent choreographers interacted with each other on stage. The audiences experience both visual and spiritual presentation with delight.

In comparison to the previous performances, Autumn River was more peaceful and the music was soft. It felt like sitting alongside the river, drinking coffee and enjoying the breeze wind. Different from the previous stages with large blocks of color, the setting of Autumn River was the river with ripples which were projected on to the dancers. With the dancers' movements, the image was harmonious. Ms. Chou Chang-ning's dance movements told the history of Cloud Gate. Although we did not have the opportunity to watch her dance in her peak, her dance might call up some sweet memories for the predecessors there. Finally, Mr. Lin Hwai-min gave a bundle of red roses to each dancer. I was moved by Ms. Chou Chang-ning and Mr. Lin standing in the middle. It was no doubt that Cloud Gate enhances coherence and solidarity in Taiwan.

Wan-fang's Afterthoughts on the Theater Experience

4-4-2-02 I was looking forward to watching the performances of TAO Dance Theater and Cloud Gate Dance Theatre in the National Theater. The first performance was Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung's Multiplication. The yellow light was projected on the dancers who seemed to become part of it. At first, I thought the stage would be black and white do to the dancers' costumes, I was surprised that the yellow, light brighten the dancers' appearances. The dance was thus more splendid and modern. I realized the power of the Multiplication.

The second section was 12 of Mr. Tao Yeh and there were 12 dancers, who presented changeable clouds. The dancers' white costumes with tender and flexible movements resembled the dancing clouds. The final work was Autumn River of Mr. Lin Hwai-min. Five experienced Cloud Gate dancers calmed us down at the beginning. It seemed like we actually saw the river in Kyoto experienced by Mr. Lin with the maple leaves floating on water. After watching this performance, I became less agitated.

Crystal's Afterthoughts on the Theater Experience

4-4-2-03 It was my first Cloud Gate Dance Theatre performance to watch on site. I not only appreciated the work, Autumn River, by Mr. Lin Hwai-min but also watched Multiplication of Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung, the successor of Mr. Lin and 12 of Mr. Tao Yeh, the artistic director of TAO Dance Theater. Autumn River was choreographed by Mr. Lin Hwai-min when he saw the maple leaves floating on the clear river in Kyoto. 12 was inspired from the changeable clouds. Multiplication was an overlap of rhythms and images from physical movements.

Although they were all different in styles, they were all impressive. The dances, costumes and settings of the stage were perfect. The dancers' efforts really paid off; the audiences were overwhelmed with emotions. Noticeably, the three pieces were performed by the other's dance troupes. For instance, 12 by Mr. Tao Yeh was presented by Cloud Gate dancers and Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung's Multiplication was performed by dancers of TAO Dance Theater. Such an arrangement demonstrated the tolerance of art without boundaries. I was deeply moved by the final part when all the audiences stood up to applaud for Mr. Lin who was about to retire. Everyone showed their highest respect and appreciation for the master.

Ling-yin's Afterthoughts on Theater Experience

4-4-2-04 The performance was the cooperation between TAO Dance Theater and Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, including Mr. Lin Hwai-min's Autumn River, Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung's Multiplication and Mr. Tao Yeh.'s 12. TAO Dance Theater performed the dance of Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung and Cloud Gate Dance Theatre performed the dance of Mr. Tao Yeh. Noticeably, the experienced Cloud Gate dancers presented Autumn River. After this last performance tour, the experienced dancers along with Mr. Lin Hwai-min will retire. Thus, it was the last dance choreographed by Mr. Lin.

Autumn River was the most impressive one. The dancer Ms. Chou Chang-ning was our instructor during Cloud Gate Theater and I was particularly touched. These experienced dancers were about to retire soon. It was sad to see the dancers with their familiar rhythms, professional attitude, good cooperation on stage. Eventhough they moved slowly, we could still perceive the force of their movements. It was the best representation of their long efforts together through the years of dance career.

Cai-ru's Afterthoughts on Theater Experience

4-4-2-05 Autumn River was choreographed by Mr. Lin Hwai-min when he saw the slow flow of the river in autumn. Mr. Lin Hwai-min selected Autumn River as his last work before his retirement. This time, TAO Dance Theater perfectly presented the play, with three excellent dance piece, Mr. Lin Hwai-min, Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung and Mr. Tao Yeh and the exchange between the dance troupes. Fashion and force of Mr. Tao Yeh, tradition of Taiwan in Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung and classical characteristics in Mr. Lin Hwai-min were shown distinctively. By cooperating with different dancers, Cloud Gate was connecting with the future. It showed their ambition. The dancers demonstrated their force on stage. However, at the same time, they could also show tender and mild visual effects.

The flow of the Autumn River seemed to recall us of the 46 years between Mr. Lin Hwai-min and Cloud Gate. The ceaseless river resembled his affection of Taiwan and Cloud Gate. Besides, I was moved by the dancers on stage who showed the affection via their bodies. They accomplished Cloud Gate with Mr. Lin Hwai-min. They would retire with Mr. Lin and it was their last dance for the Taiwanese audience. I was so touched and finally I stood up and applauded with the other audiences to appreciate their remarkable efforts and contributions to Taiwan.

Chun-hsien's Afterthoughts on the Theater Experience

4-4-2-06 On Oct, 20th, we watched the performance by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre at the National Theater and the performance was divided into three sections. 12 choreographed by Mr. Tao Yeh, Multiplication by Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung and Autumn River choreographed by Mr. Lin Hwai-min. Multiplication choreographed by Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung for Tao Dance Theater dancers interpreted the strongest spirit of Tao Dance Theater. He developed the unique performance by his skills and different skills of two groups.

I loved Autumn River the most which was choreographed by Mr. Lin Hwai-min. The vital performance invigorated the audiences. I think the renowned performances all require the dancers' teamwork. Although I did not comprehend all the works today, I felt the charm of Cloud Gate by watching the dancers' beautiful movements!

Yung-chieh's Afterthoughts on the Theater Experience

4-4-2-07 After reading the information about Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, I became in love with the work of Cloud Gate. However, I could only watch it on films. Today I finally arrived at Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall to watch the collaborative performance by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and TAO Dance Theater. It was the last program planned by Mr. Lin Hwai-min before his retirement. As expected, all the seats were occupied. It was a precious opportunity to watch their live performance and we could not wait to watch them perform.

At the beginning, unique lighting effect, costume design and music of Multiplication highlighted the movements of the dancers who spun their bodies to show the power of rhythm. Subsequently, in 12, there were 12 dancers respectively interpreted the work to show the individual uniqueness. Finally, with the finish of the Autumn River, Mr. Lin Hwai-min showed up quietly and the audiences applauded! Cloud Gate has been highly appreciated for its dedication to culture. It was impressive to watch the work of three international choreographers!

Yen-chen's Afterthoughts on the Theater Experience

4-4-2-08 We watched the performance by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and TAO Dance Theater and realized that the previous two works were choreographed by the younger generation. I enjoyed Multiplication of Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung and the steps of dance were delicate. I was impressed by the colors on the stage. I looked forward to Cloud Gate Dance Theatre led by Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung! 12 choreographed by Mr. Tao Yeh was a solo performance and each dancer showed charming ground movements with characteristics.

The Autumn River performance was the last work choreographed by Mr. Lin Hwai-min for the retiring dancers and it won lots of applauses. Finally, Mr. Lin gave bunches of red roses to the retiring dancers. Mr. Lin was close with his dancers and they were like partners, teachers with students and family! Before the performance, I realized that Mr. Lin Hwai-min and Mr. Tao Yeh sat at the corner behind us. They strictly examined their work even after numerous performances. They never complacent themselves, and this was the key to their tremendous success!

Ching-pei's Afterthoughts on the Theater Experience

4-4-2-09 On October 20, we watched three performance by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and TAO Dance Theater in the National Theater. The performances were the cooperation of 3 international masters and two dance troupes. The works choreographed by Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung, the successor of Cloud Gate was Multiplication performed by Tao Dance Theater dancers. 12 choreographed by Mr. Tao Yeh, the artistic director of TAO Dance Theater, was performed by Cloud Gate dancers. The last one was the most elegant Autumn River choreographed by Mr. Lin Hwai-min and danced by the experienced Cloud Gate dancers. Three totally different pieces fully demonstrated the beauty of the dancers' bodies, and they all deserved great admiration.

What impressed me was 12. At the beginning, the stage was white as snow and 12 dancers took turns to perform. Their white costumes responded to the pure white background. Dancers' changeable movements resembled the flow of clouds in the sky. Their excellent dance was impressive! Autumn River was the last work planned by Mr. Lin Hwai-min before his retirement. The dancers' elegant movements and river of the background showed visual effect. Finally, the dancers thanked the audiences and it meant Cloud Gate would move to the next phase. With Mr. Lin Hwai-min's 46-year dedication, we looked forward to the future of the new Cloud Gate.

Pin-tung's Afterthoughts on the Theater Experience

4-4-2-10 When we entered the theater, the lighting was turned off. In the ten-minute period, I wondered why the time was slowed down and it was still the opening? On stage, the dancers moved to the music and they did their best with the lighting. It was my first time watching a live performance by Cloud Gate. I was excited to appreciate the dance troupe which combined modernity and tradition depicted in the books.

Each section of the performance was too short for me. There were two times of pause. The dancers of each section did their best on stage with teamwork to present the classic work. Time flied quickly and when it was finished, everyone applauded. I wish I will still have the chance to watch the live performance of Cloud Gate in the future!
