Social Public Welfare

Cloud Gate Culture and Arts Foundation is based on the creed “creation, performance, promotion of dance and other artistic attempts and reinforcement of cultural development and international exchange.”  It consists of three grant projects: the “Wanderer Project,” which encourages the young people to expand their horizons abroad; the “Art Makers Project,” that allows young choreographers to create and rehearse in Cloud Gate Theater; and the “Lo Man-fei Fellowship,” which assists young dancers to elevate their dance skills. Through the foundation’s power and funding, Mr. Lin Hwai-min has presented outdoor dances for numerous Taiwanese audiences. Tens of thousands of people have had the opportunity to delight in Cloud Gate’s high caliber performances without purchasing tickets.

The “Lo Man-fei Dance Scholarship” was created in 2006. It supports young dancers in the pursuit of performances, creations, and advanced studies, auditions for overseas dance competitions; as well as helping them in case of emergencies. The dancer Lo Man-fei, who stood on the international stage with Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, devoted her life to dance. After her death, her family founded the scholarship to help pass on Ms. Lo’s love and encouragement to young dancers. They hope to cultivate more exceptional dancers, choreographers and other dance related professionals.

The “Wanderer Project” was founded by Mr. Lin Hwai-min after he received the National Cultural Award of the R.O.C. in 2004. In conjunction with long-term support of the “Stan Shih Foundation,” young artists of any discipline (not limited to dance) are granted the opportunity to travel abroad for a journey of self-inspection. This way, they can expand their horizons and develop truly unique creations. One previous participant of the project said that the most significant benefit of the trip was the chance for soul-searching and finding the true self.

The “Art Makers Project” was established by Mr. Lin Hwai-min when he received the prize of the first “Tsai Wan-tsai Taiwan Contribution Award” in 2015. Mr. Lin, to whom Taiwanese art and culture is a top priority, wanted to use this project to support artistic creativity, provide rehearsal space, and fund expenditures. Thus, winners of this project could focus their attention on innovative endeavors and have ample time to contemplate their work.
