Helmsman of Cloud Gate
Father of Cloud Gate
Mr. Lin Hwai-min was born in 1947, in Hsingang Township, Chiayi. He is a dancer, choreographer, author, and founder as well as artistic director of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre. In 1973, he founded Taiwan's first modern dance troupe "Cloud Gate Dance Theatre". At the age of 14, he fell in love with dance after watching a performance of José Limón's modern dance troupe. He later began learning dance while studying in the United States. The money he made from publishing his work Nursery Song in the literary supplement of United Daily News allowed him to take his first ever dance lessons. These lessons lasted for two months.
In 1988, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre was disbanded due to financial issues. In 1991, after words of encouragement from a taxi driver, Mr. Lin Hwai-min decided to restart Cloud Gate with his dancers. Mr. Lin's choreographic style went through many reincarnations, from works such as Legacy (which is related to our ancestors), Legend of the White Snake and Dream of the Red Chamber (based on Chinese literary works), Siddhartha (with influences of the west), to Floral Declaration and Moon Water (which show power and beauty). He is recognized world-wide for his role as a choreographer. Besides the aforementioned works, he also composed dances filled with contemporary awareness. Although the journey has not consistently been successful, he always said humbly, "I have never thought of myself as a choreographer. I simply try to do the best that I can. I thank the audiences' support from the bottom of my heart."

Successor of Cloud Gate
Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung grew up in Wanhua District, Taipei. He is a modern dance choreographer who graduated from the dance department of Taipei National University of the Arts. He then joined Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and became the artistic director of Cloud Gate 2. He studied dance in New York. With Cloud Gate's "Wanderer Project," he travelled in India for more than 60 days and reflected on his life in an unfamiliar environment. In 2017, he collaborated with the Sydney Dance Company on the work Full Moon, which was well-received in both Australia and Paris. He became the first Asian choreographer to worked with Sydney Dance Company.
The inspirations for Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung's dance are based on his childhood. As a child, he sold slippers with his family near Monga Lungshan Temple. He observed the different postures of the locals and was influenced by parade formation culture. Mr. Cheng applied to become a dance student at PuQian Elementary School's special dance class at the age of six. In junior high school, he received two years' of probation for drug use and truancy. Mr. Lu Su-wei, his probational officer, took him to work as a volunteer for underprivileged groups. Through this experience, he witnessed the uncertainties and trials of life, which later became the source of his creations and fueled his determination to study dance.
In 2020, Mr. Cheng Tsung-lung will undertake the position of artistic director of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre. His dance career was significantly impacted after leaving the army with spinal injury. Unable to further train as a dancer, he withdrew from Cloud Gate to study choreography. He absorbed the skills and knowledge of choreography while working as Mr. Lin Hwai-min's chauffeur. After spending long hours alongside Mr. Lin, he acquired the foundations of choreography and became familiar with the administrative duties of Cloud Gate. After his experience of training the Cloud Gate 2 troupe, the new artistic director is ready to shine on the main stage.
